A European Parliament committee tasked with monitoring the rule of law in Malta will be asking the government to stop its passport sales contract with Henley & Partners and publish the full Egrant inquiry report. A draft motion for a resolution drawn up by the European Parliament’s Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs committee (Libe), which is expected to be presented in Strasbourg on Monday evenng, will also raise concerns about the “hate speech and disparagement” of the memory of slain blogger/journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. The draft motions call on the Maltese government to publicly and unambiguously condemn such acts and urges strong action to be taken against any public officials fuelling hate. The committee will back calls for a full and independent public inquiry into the murder and into the response by the public authorities to it. According to the motion, the Maltese authorities have not yet sought to obtain data stored on Ms Caruana Galizia’s laptops and hard drives from the German federal police.
