Bishkek, Feb. 18, 2019. /Kabar/. Famous American magazine The Hollywood Reporter published a review about a film by Kyrgyz director Aibek Daiyrbekov The Song of the Tree (Kyrgyz: Дарак ыры). In his work, film critic and author of the article Sheri Linden described in detail the plot of the film, the main characters and noted that the work of Daiyrbekov focused on tradition and modernity. “An Old World patriarch, his rebellious daughter and her outcast sweetheart are at the center of The Song of the Tree. Set amongst a nomadic community in 18th-century Kyrgyzstan, the film is a simple story well told, partly through song — a kind of high-plains Fiddler on the Roof, but with a spare, direct sensibility to match the wind-scrubbed Central Asian landscape, continues its travels to festivals,” Linden wrote, reminding the readers that the film was presented at the festival in Palm Springs. In the column, he paid attention to each image, what they wanted to show and whether they managed to convey their idea. In addition, Linden is impressed with « crystalline voice» Saltanat Bakaeva in the role of Begimai. “The saga is spun around a specifically Kyrgyzstani history. It captures a society in harmony with nature, at a moment when more modern outside influences, political and religious, are expanding their reach. That's a subtly incorporated subtext of the film, which treats its emotional themes operatically but never spells out its broader underlying concepts. The story is propelled, at key moments, by songs of yearning, sorrow and communal resilience, the clear poetry of the lyrics paired with the plaintive lilt of a few simple melodies,” the critic described. The Song of the Tree at the beginning of the year was presented to the jury in the World Cinema Now international program – jubilee 30th International film festival in California (USA). Read more
