Over $10m raised to help affected families in Gaza, says Masagos Zulkifli

Over $10 million in funds have been collected to aid those affected by the Gaza crisis, Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Masagos Zulkifli said in a doorstop interview at Masjid Omar Kampong Melaka on Wednesday (April 10). Of that amount, $8 million was collected between October and November last year by the Rahmatan Lil Alamin Foundation (RLAF) and has already been provided to Gaza, reported The Straits Times yesterday (April 9). During the Ramadan period this year, the RLAF appealed to the public for donations once more and garnered over $2 million.  This $2 million further comprises $400,000 collected from public donations via the 72 mosques in Singapore. «I think this will go a great way in providing them (people in Gaza) comfort, providing them with assurance that the international community is concerned for them,» Masagos said.  «This is also the spirit that we want Muslims in Singapore to show - that mercy and welfare are not only for those who are Muslims or those who are nearby us, but also for those who are far beyond our shores.»

$0.50 carrier bag charge justified? Woman voices concern while Skechers says advanced notice was given

An irate Skechers customer kicked up a fuss after she found out that she had paid $0.50 for a carrier bag, after spending about $200 on her shoes.  A user by the name of Sen LY, who purchased two pairs of shoes from Skechers at Vivocity, took to Facebook group Complaint Singapore on April 7 to voice her experience. «I only realised that I was charged $0.50 for the carrier bag when I got home,» Sen LY wrote, adding that she paid $204 for her shoes. She said she was not informed of the charge by the staff. «I should have been told before paying that there would be a charge of $0.50 for the bag. Then I could decide whether to pay for the bag or not to buy the shoes at all,» she wrote, adding that it is «daylight robbery» even though the amount is small. In response to queries from 8World in a report yesterday (April 9), a spokesman for Skechers said that they have started charging a fee for their bags since Feb 1 this year. A small carrier bag costs $0.20, while a large one is available at $0.50.

Singapore, Germany to work towards strategic partnership

BERLIN — Singapore and Germany will work towards upgrading their relations to a strategic partnership, in recognition of the «growing depth and breadth» of bilateral ties. This was announced by Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) on April 9, after Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong called on German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin. The leaders took stock of the countries' long-standing and multifaceted bilateral ties, which have strengthened over the decades, said MFA in a statement. They also reaffirmed their commitment to intensifying co-operation in existing and emerging areas, and exchanged views on regional and international issues. In a social media post, DPM Wong said he was glad to have called on Scholz, and was happy that both sides agreed to work towards upgrading relations to a strategic partnership. DPM Wong, who is also Finance Minister, is on an official visit to Germany from April 8 to 10 and France from April 10 to 13.

Two lawyers suspended 3 years each for wasting judges' time, misleading court

SINGAPORE — Two lawyers, who are partners at reputable law firms, have each been handed a three-year suspension for misleading Singapore's highest court and wasting the time of the five judges on the panel. Paul Seah Zhen Wei, from Tan Kok Quan Partnership, and Chandra Mohan Rethnam, from Rajah & Tann, were the lead counsel on opposite sides of a matter that was heard by the Court of Appeal on Jan 20, 2021. Seah was representing the liquidators of Sembawang Engineers and Constructors (SEC), while Chandra was representing subcontractor Metax Eco Solutions. SEC and Metax had reached a settlement agreement of the underlying dispute on Nov 28, 2019, which made the appeal purely academic. But the lawyers proceeded with the appeal and did not tell the court about the settlement until they were questioned by the court during the hearing. The liquidators had wanted to go ahead because they wanted the Court of Appeal to determine what they deemed important legal questions that had wide implications on insolvency proceedings.

'Today no char siew': Diner upset over curt reply at Old Airport Road wanton noodle stall after payment

Wanton noodles with no char siew (Cantonese BBQ pork) is almost like ordering prawn noodles without prawn. And one diner had enough after being told there wouldn't be char siew in his wanton noodles only after he paid for his food.  In a post on Facebook group Complaint Singapore on April 8, a user by the name Toni Tan recounted his experience ordering from Old Airport Road wanton noodle stall located at the Koufu food court of KK Women's and Children's hospital on March 12. «Today no char siew!» Tan wrote that he was told by a staff member as she walked away. He added: «Very bad attitude and services. She should have told me there was no char siew when I ordered, so I can cancel or change to dumpling noodles or something else.» Angered by the curt reply and the missing BBQ meat in his meal, he wrote to Koufu, who told him that they would offer him a complimentary meal from the same stall, but he would need to inform them one day in advance. Which annoyed Tan even more. He wrote: «Do they expect me to travel all the way to KK Women's and Children's hospital just to have the complimentary meal?»

Sentosa Cove developer cuts prices of unsold units by over 40%, cites increased interest in area

SINGAPORE — Unsold units at The Residences at W Singapore Sentosa Cove will be up for sale at over 40 per cent off its initial launch price in 2010. Cityview Place Holdings, an associate of City Developments (CDL) and developer of the 228-unit upscale condominium, will be releasing 58 units for sale on April 15, with prices starting from $1,648 per square foot (psf). A Cityview spokesman told The Straits Times it is «extending an offer price for these selected units» as there has been increased interest and sales activity in Sentosa Cove properties in recent months. Over the past week, property agents have been circulating pricing details and floor plans to potential buyers and inviting them to a preview of the property from April 10 to 14. The 99-year leasehold condominium, which is part of the W hotel brand, was first launched for sale during the property peak in 2010. Back then, the two- to four-bedroom units and penthouses, with sizes from 1,227 sq ft to 6,297 sq ft, were priced from $2,500 psf to $3,000 psf. But sales of condo units in Sentosa were hit by a series of property cooling measures introduced from 2010.

Man gets jail after choking SCDF medic

SINGAPORE - A man was sentenced to two months’ jail in March for attacking a Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) medic while drunk. The incident, which left the medic with a sprained neck, was highlighted by the SCDF in a Facebook post on April 9, in which it warned the public not to abuse its first responders. The incident in question happened on May 17, 2023, when the man was found by an ambulance crew at about 9.50pm lying unconscious near an industrial building in Marymount. The man, identified in court documents as Tong He, 36, reeked of alcohol and spoke with a slur when roused by the crew. They made the assessment that Tong was incapable of taking care of himself and had to go to the hospital. A paramedic took Tong to the waiting ambulance, but he suddenly turned aggressive and uncooperative. She gave Tong an ice pack, but he threw it at the medic, Mr Heinrich Ho, 25, who was serving his national service at the time. Shortly after, two police officers arrived at the scene and managed to convince Tong to get into the ambulance.
