President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev approved an agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan on cooperation in construction of a nuclear power plant in the territory of the Republic of Uzbekistan on 13 October 2018, Gazeta.uz reported. The document was signed on 7 September 2018 in Moscow following the 19th meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission for Economic Cooperation. Uzbek Prime Minister Abdulla Aripov and Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev signed the agreement. Uzbekistan and the state corporation Rosatom have agreed to build a nuclear power plant (NPP) in the republic. The NPP will consist of two power units with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts each. For the construction of a nuclear power plant, the safest and most modern power unit in the world has been set aside. Its commissioning is scheduled until 2028. Currently, the need for electricity in Uzbekistan is 69 billion kW/h. Almost 85% of this energy is generated by burning gas and coal, the remaining 15% is produced by hydroelectric power plants. 16.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas, 86 thousand tons of fuel oil and 2.3 million tons of coal are consumed to generate electrical energy. A potential site for the construction of nuclear power plants was chosen near Lake Tudakul on the border of Navoi and Bukhara regions.
