Power of persuasion goes way beyond mere advertising

There was a time when persuasion was easy to recognise. It was the stuff on billboards and flyers or between the articles in newspapers and magazines. It interrupted TV and radio programmes and it was obviously trying to sell us something. We called it “advertising”. Today’s consumers are no longer simply on the receiving end of advertising through mass media channels. The billions of us who use Facebook, Instagram and the like every day, have become a key part of the process of persuasion itself. Through these social media channels we present highly edited, stylised versions of our lifestyles and are able to trade ideas and information in an instant. This activity places us not at the end of one of the linear processes of marketing, but at the very heart of our own unique world of communication, content and commerce. Almost every activity we engage in now involves some form of commercial exchange.  It was only during the 1980s that researchers began taking an interest in consumption outside the narrow parameters laid down by pure economics. And they were quick to recognise that the influence of persuasion had extended well beyond simply encouraging people to buy goods that they...

Ronaldo committed to Juve, says Allegri

Cristiano Ronaldo is committed to Juventus next season despite his bitter disappointment at the Italian giants Champions League flop, coach Massimiliano Allegri revealed on Friday. Allegri's injury-hit side host Fiorentina on Saturday needing just a point to lift their eighth straight Serie A title, days after a shock home 2-1 defeat to the Dutch side that saw them eliminated 3-2 on aggregate. «Cristiano is the future of Juventus. He has done very well this year and will do so next season, of course he is disappointed like all of us but he's calm about it,» said Allegri. «Cristiano has had an extraordinary season and will play tomorrow.» Five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo had been bidding for a sixth Champions League title to add to his four won with Real Madrid and one with Manchester United. The 34-year-old joined Juventus from Real last summer in a 100 million-euro ($117 million) deal which runs until 2022, with a reported annual salary of 31 million euros. He scored six of his teams' 14 Champions League goals this season and has 19 so far in Serie A, four behind leading scorer Fabio Quagliarella. No cooking at €4m state-of-the-art kitchen at St Vincent de Paul

A new €4 million state-of-the-art kitchen inaugurated almost a year ago at St Vincent De Paul Residence has never been used to prepare meals for residents and staff, Times of Malta is informed. Instead, food is being supplied by contractor James Caterers, cooked at the company’s facilities in Fgura and Bulebel and then transported every morning to the government elderly people’s home in Luqa. The meals are then stored inside the new kitchen and distributed during the day, catering industry sources said. “The new kitchen is only being used as a storage facility by the contractor and also for the washing of trolleys and other related equipment before they are sent back to the private caterer to be re-used in the following days,” senior officials at the Luqa complex told the newspaper, insisting on anonymity. The new kitchen was “sheer waste of money” and justifiably raised suspicion that the project was really meant to serve another purpose other than cooking food, they added. When approached, Vincent de Paul Residence CEO Josianne Cutajar admitted that “some of the food preparation and processing is being done in offsite facilities”. However, she insisted some of the food “is...
