Saudi Arabia welcomes US decision on Iran oil sanction waivers

Tue, 2019-04-23 11:36 DUBAI: Saudi Arabia has welcomed US Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo’s announcement that waivers on the sanctions on Iranian oil exports will be lifted, Saudi state agency SPA reported. Saudi Arabia believes the US decision is a necessary step to pressure the Iranian government to stop jeopardizing peace and end their global support for terrorism, the Saudi Foreign Minister, Ibrahim bin Abdulaziz Al-Assaf, said. The Iranian regime uses the country’s income to finance dangerous policies without any consideration for international law, the minster added. International pressures on Iran must continue until it stops interfering in the domestic affairs of other countries, he stressed. Saudi Arabia will continue their strict adherence to the policies, which aim to stabilize international markets, and will not produce oil beyond the balance, Al-Assaf said. The Kingdom will cooperate with other oil producing countries to produce enough oil for consumers, he added.  Main category: Saudi ArabiaTags: Saudi ArabiaUnited StatesMike PompeoIbrahim Al-Assaf Saudi Arabia’s first electronic cochlear implant performed in Jubail US not renewing sanctions waivers for importing Iranian oil, working with Saudi Arabia and UAE

Startup of the Week: The Koshk: Caps that creatively speak your mind

Author: Mon, 2019-04-22 23:13 JEDDAH: Millennials and Generation Z are known for their sassiness, dark humor and love of aesthetics. At the Koshk, based in Jeddah, youngsters can find caps that communicate exactly that.  It was established by two 23-year-old Saudi entrepreneurs, Jumana Binshihon and Jawaher Al-Esayi, when they were still in high school. “We actually needed community service hours, so we decided to take part in a bazaar trading clothes, caps and phone cases that would appeal to adolescents. We participated around three times in different bazaars when we noticed a high demand for caps and all we had to offer were Westernized ones. So, we decided to design our own,” Binshihon told Arab News. The Koshk offers distressed baseball caps with rounded brims, and include their trademark small-scale texts embroidered onto them. The store is planning to design and develop even more styles to appeal to a wider variety of people. The caps are usually made from cotton, though the store has produced a few suede caps, and are planning to use different materials in the near future. The texts are available in both Arabic and English, and include humorous or trendy slogans. “We would say our Arabic and English captions and designs are quite distinctive. They are funny and relevant. When people browse our caps they smile and tend to comment on how much they relate to it,” Binshihon said. When coming up with a design, the founders start by analyzing their target audience. “We ask, are they Generation Z or Millennials, what are their interests, and so on. It’s easier because we are targeting people our age. Both generations are outspoken, attentive to the latest trends and are bombarded with memes and dark-humored captions through social media platforms.  “We gain inspiration from our daily lives, from gatherings with friends to our incessant scrolling through Instagram and Tumblr. We write down what we and the audience can relate to, for instance, the caption ‘Never Satisfied’ — which is popular and, unfortunately, a habit for both generations. When it is time for our next order, we go through our notes that we keep for months and see what works and what does not. It is an ongoing process.” Their brand’s message is about embracing individuality and eccentricity, said Al-Esayi. “On a surface level, our message is ephemeral because our designs are continuously changing depending on our current perceptions.” Customers can find the Koshk at CRATE in Jeddah’s Al-Salama district. The program is primarily designed to increase the number of internationally accredited Saudi tour guides, he added. It covers both theoretical and practical aspects, and heritage places — such as Al-Bujairi district in Ad Diriyah and the National Museum — are visited to apply practical training skills, he said. For the first time, female trainees are being licensed in the field. A report has revealed that since its launch 474 female students benefitted from the “Your Job ... Author: Mon, 2019-04-22 23:25 JUBAIL: A medical team at the Royal Commission Hospital in Jubail has performed Saudi Arabia’s first electronic cochlear implant operation. The head of the team, Dr. Mohammed Al-Sheikh, said the implant was successfully conducted for a 15-month-old baby who was born completely deaf. An Auditory Brainstem Response test was previously run to ascertain the nature of the baby’s condition when the parents noticed its failure to respond to sound. Dr. Mohammed Al-Muqbel, head of the health services program at the Royal Commission in Jubail, praised the efforts of Al-Sheikh and his staff. Al-Sheikh added that credit was also due to the Newborn Hearing Screening Program at the hospital, which worked in collaboration with the audiology unit to provide early intervention and treatment for babies born with hearing defects. The operation, meanwhile, represents a groundbreaking moment in technological development for Saudi medicine, making the next generation of auditory aids available to citizens, and removing barriers for deaf children from an increasingly early age.   Main category: Saudi ArabiaTags: cochlear Over 600 cochlear implants in 23 yearsKSA needs 1,000 electronic cochlear implants annually

Saudi ‘Cultural Days’ attracts crowds in Turkmenistan

Author: SPA AshgabatID: 1555877642262188500Mon, 2019-04-22 00:34 ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan: This weekend saw a three-day celebration of Saudi Arabian culture take place in Turkmenistan. Saudi “Cultural Days” opened to visitors on Friday and concluded Sunday. On Thursday night, an official opening ceremony took place at Al-Maqam Palace. The event included a number of exhibitions, displayed at the Museum of Fine Arts in the Turkmen capital, Ashgabat. The pavilion of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Institute for Hajj and Umrah Research took visitors on a virtual-reality journey through the Two Holy Mosques of Makkah and Madinah and the holy sites, highlighting their expansion and development. It also featured photos and models of projects dating back to the founding of Saudi Arabia, in addition to a number of research papers produced by the institute. Elsewhere, a pavilion of traditional Saudi costumes displayed dresses from several regions of the Kingdome, which visitors could try on for themselves, and the Darah Foundation provided a history of Saudi-Turkmen relations, with a particular focus on cultural ties, and exhibited artworks that reflected society and the environment in the Kingdom. A pavilion dedicated to the Zamzam Project explained the evolution of the methods of extracting water from the historic well and distributing it to the Two Holy Mosques. The College of Agriculture at Qassim University hosted a palm and date exhibition at its pavilion, and there were also pavilions dedicated to Arabic calligraphy; hospitality; the art of henna; and traditional folk dances and music. On Saturday, the Saudi delegation for “Cultural Days” — which included Saudi Ambassador to Turkmenistan Khalid bin Faisal Al-Sahli, and the Ministry of Media’s general supervisor for international cultural relations, Omar bin Mohammed Al-Aqeel — visited Magtymguly State University in Ashgabat. During the visit, Dr. Ibrahim bin Mohammed Al-Muzaini and Dr. Hamoud bin Mohammed Al-Najidi of the Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University delivered a lecture titled “The importance of the Silk Road, and historical and cultural relations between Turkmenistan and the Arabian Peninsula.” Al-Muzaini described Turkmenistan as “the jewel of Asia Minor and the essence of history and civilization,” noting that the country is home to historical and archaeological sites dating back to the early Islamic era. He explained that trading routes traditionally passed through Turkmenistan on their way to the Arabian Peninsula and other parts of the Islamic world. Al-Muzaini proposed establishing a center to document relations between Saudi Arabia and Turkmenistan. Al-Najidi highlighted the cultural ties between the two countries, focusing on the Arab presence in Turkmenistan as well as scientific, economic, and trade ties between the Kingdom and Turkmenistan, in addition to Hajj routes between the two countries. He also discussed the Turkmen presence in Saudi Arabia through the Khurasan Road, emphasizing the developments and changes the road has gone through. Ambassador Al-Sahli said in a press statement: “We aspire to assist those who promote and support Arabic language departments in Turkmen universities, and I look forward to agreements that support teaching Arabic in Turkmen universities through the employment of Saudi specialists.” The dean of the College of Foreign Languages at the university, Dr. Awraz Qaldi Awad Saad, emphasized his country’s desire to include Arabic in its educational curricula, and to teach Turkmen heritage in foreign languages, including Arabic.
