Author: Fri, 2020-01-17 01:59 NEW YORK: Saudi Arabia’s official representative for the 2020 G20 summit of world leaders being staged in Riyadh has briefed the UN General Assembly on preparations for the high-powered meeting. Fahad Al-Mubarak, the Kingdom’s G20 sherpa charged with helping pave the way for the leaders’ November gathering, introduced delegates to the theme, aims, and main priorities of the summit. The meeting in New York was opened by the president of the UN General Assembly, and the UN undersecretary-general, who welcomed the sherpa and expressed their hopes for a successful G20 summit under the Kingdom’s presidency. Al-Mubarak said that, under the guidance of King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the G20 agenda development process was being conducted in an inclusive and comprehensive way in order to reflect the most important world issues. Addressing attendees, the sherpa talked about the main objectives for this year’s G20 gathering under the theme of “Realizing Opportunities of the 21st Century for All.” The first was to empower people – especially women and youth – by creating the right conditions in which they could live, work and thrive. Safeguarding the planet by fostering collective efforts to protect the environment, especially on the issues of climate, water, food, and energy, was another aim. He also talked about ways to shape new frontiers, by adopting long-term and bold strategies to share the benefits of innovation and technological advancement with a strong focus on the digital economy. During the briefing session, Al-Mubarak gave details about the global challenges that the G20 countries could jointly address to achieve economic growth and sustainable development. Author: Fri, 2020-01-17 02:39 I was born and raised in Al-Malaz in Riyadh, where I studied at a public school until the sixth grade, when my family decided to move to Unaizah. I continued to perform well academically due to my parents’ dedication toward my educational endeavors. My father, may God have mercy upon him, instilled two prominent values in me: Commitment and responsibility. These principles have affected every aspect of my life, especially as the youngest child in a conservative Najdi home. Surrounded by my older siblings, my childhood was shaped by the multitude of lessons that I learned from them. My love for children began when I watched my siblings’ kids fill our home with love and energy – a huge part of my adolescence went into taking care of my nieces and nephews. It made me confident in my ability to deal with children, knowing how to win them over and guide them, which I later put to the test when I finished high school, returning to Riyadh to major in early childhood studies at King Saud University, ultimately graduating with honors. Following my graduation, I got married and kick-started my professional career as a kindergarten teacher in different private preschools in Riyadh. Within a few years, I was working as a teacher at Kingdom Schools, dropping my eldest daughter off at the school’s nursery each morning to go and tutor other people’s kids across campus. Over the next seven years, I was blessed with the birth of my three other children. After years of being simultaneously a mother and a teacher, I decided to put a pause to my career and concentrated on raising my children. This decision was a product of my strong belief in investing in humans through dedicating time and effort toward raising well-mannered individuals and building stronger familial bonds. Being an educator taught me that there was always space for me to learn something new. I learned a lot from my children, particularly as I remained involved in their school and extracurricular activities, and collaboratively navigated their interests and hobbies. My prior knowledge of child-nurturing practices helped me form a unique relationship with my kids. The bond between parents and children grows stronger, I found, when parents acknowledge that they are role models and remain aware of their behavior and manners at all times. Furthermore, it is crucial that parents avoid three harmful, yet common, practices: Criticism, comparison, and blame. These create toxic environments that negatively impact a child’s confidence, sense of self, and self-esteem. I try to be considerate of my children’s feelings by avoiding harsh or public criticism and focusing on their personal progress, only comparing them with their own selves. If they face a difficult situation, instead of blaming them for it, I encourage them to think about the moral behind the incident and discuss takeaways to be implemented in the future. I seek to base my relationship with my children on love and understanding by spending a lot of quality time with them and considering their diverse personalities, especially as I returned to the workplace as a school principal and subsequently, an academic supervisor at the Ministry of Education. Those quality times are what remains in a child’s subconscious in the long run. Later, while pursuing my master’s degree in gifted education at the Arabian Gulf University in Bahrain, I learned about the importance of enriching my children’s interests, whether through helping them explore playing a new instrument, enrolling them in dance courses and soccer academies, presenting them with a book on their to-read list, or accompanying them on outdoor activities. Sharing these experiences opened new doors for all of us. When my eldest daughter went through the college application process, where she is now pursuing a degree in geology at Brown University, in the US, she opened my eyes to the required preparation for her younger siblings. By the time they reach her age, they would be prepared with the requirements for applying to esteemed institutions, if they decide to follow a similar path. Encouraging my older son to follow his passion for the outdoors, through hiking around scenic Saudi nature areas with him, resulted in him climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, at the age of 14. Our trips exposed me to the beauty of my country, where I visited fascinating historical and natural sites, had meaningful conversations, and gained valuable friendships. I was motivated to contribute to the positive changes taking place in the Kingdom by sharing these momentous experiences with others. That is why I decided to begin the process of acquiring a tourist guide license from the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage. That in turn gave me a chance to solidify my knowledge of my country and, at the same time, share that beauty with the rest of the world via my podcast, Dharf Makan, and my Instagram account (@mona.alturief). 60 days until 2020 Saudi Census begins

Author: Fri, 2020-01-17 04:23 RIYADH: There are just 60 days to go until the start of the 2020 Saudi Census. Families will have 20 days, from Mar. 17 until Apr. 6, to submit their information. The General Authority for Statistics (Gastat) issued the reminder on Thursday, as the final preparations continued for the Kingdom’s fifth General Census of Population, Housing and Establishments. The next phase, running from Feb. 3 until Mar. 6, involves a survey of buildings, property units and families. Previously, census takers visited people in their homes to collect the required information about their families, but thanks to advances in technology, residents will for the first time be able to complete an online census form instead. The 2020 Saudi Census will provide a wide range of up-to-date data about the population that will be used to plan and carry out studies and research required by development programs and plans, and to help achieve the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030. It will reveal changes in population characteristics, and the data will be used to make local, regional and international comparisons and to review and evaluate future population estimates. As part of the preparatory work, Gastat has updated its population records and postal addresses, and the online app that people will use to enter their details has been designed and tested. Training of census workers is also continuing. To ensure the collected information is as accurate as possible, given the changes to the collection process and the increased use of technology, Gastat has linked a number of data platforms. It is also working with the National Information Center and the Saudi Post. Saudi Arabia conducted its first official census in 1974, the second in 1992, the third in 2004 and the fourth in 2010. As of the last census, the Kingdom’s population was 27,136,977. Author: Thu, 2020-01-16 15:37 RIYADH: Women will account for one third of all those attending the Business 20 (B20) summit in Riyadh in November, CEO and chairman of Saudi Basic Industries Corp. (SABIC) Yousef Al-Benyan said. The female contingency of the 640 delegates from more than 20 countries, is “the highest ever in all B20s,” Al-Benyan said in an opening speech at the B20 Saudi Arabia inception. The B20 summit will form part of the 15th annual G20 leaders’ summit which runs from Nov. 21 to 22, for the first time in Riyadh. The event will focus on equity, and gender equality in terms of increasing women’s participation in business, especially in leadership positions, he added. B20 Saudi Arabia will also address challenges in digitization, energy, sustainability and climate, finance and infrastructure, future of work and education, trade and investment and finally integrity and compliance. The G20 is a forum where the leaders of the world’s 20 largest economies meet to discuss a number of issues, but often ends in stalemate situations where leaders fail to reach an agreement on major issues. At the G20 summit in Osaka last year, leaders agreed to disagree on climate change, with the USA dissenting from a commitment to carry out the 2015 Paris climate change agreement. Organizers of this year’s event are more hopeful of a positive outcome on burning issues. “The aim of B20 in Saudi Arabia is to ensure that the voice of a global business is heard and addressed by the G20 leaders,” Al-Benyan said. “To do this, we need B20 Saudi Arabia intended to be inclusive, impactable and for sure differentiative,” he added.   Main category: Saudi ArabiaTags: 2020 G20 Summit Saudi foreign minister reviews preparations for G20 Summit in RiyadhG20 event on infrastructure investment concludes in Riyadh

Saudi Arabia tops donor states to Yemeni aid fund

Author: Thu, 2020-01-16 04:42 RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has been named as the world’s top contributor to a fund providing vital humanitarian aid for Yemen. According to a report issued by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the Kingdom remained the chief supporter of the Yemen Humanitarian Response Plan (YHRP) 2019, which is estimated to be $4.19 billion.  The total funding of Saudi Arabia was $968.4 million, representing 28 percent of the YHRP, with the US coming second with a donation of $907.6 million (26 percent). The OCHA aims to raise a further $71 million toward the relief program to help tackle the continuing and deteriorating humanitarian situation in Yemen. The response plan supports sectors including food security, agriculture, health, water and hygiene, sanitation, nutrition, shelter, and education, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Wednesday. The YHRP is the largest distress call by humanitarian organizations to alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people while working to support sustainable recovery. The war in Yemen, the Arab world’s poorest country, has caused what the UN has described as the globe’s worst humanitarian crisis, with 22 million people needing aid.    Main category: Saudi ArabiaTags: Saudi Arabia Saudi aid agency KSRelief launches International Journal of Humanitarian Studies website

Author: Wed, 2020-01-15 19:40 RIYADH: Global policymakers have met in Riyadh to map out “urgent” plans aimed at tackling the challenges and risks to world economic growth. The first gathering of the Framework Working Group (FWG) under the G20 Saudi presidency discussed ways to improve access to economic opportunities for all, a key priority of the 2020 summit of world leaders’ agenda. During the FWG meeting held on Jan. 12 and 13, the head of the Saudi team, Dr. Naif Alghaith, said: “It is an urgent priority to break barriers that prevent people from having access to economic opportunities. “We are working to identify the current conditions of the global economy, the economic risks and challenges facing our world, and the policy responses to mitigate downside risks.” The group’s talks were co-chaired by Clare Lombardelli, chief economic adviser to the UK Treasury, and Sanjeev Sanyal, principal economic adviser to India’s Ministry of Finance. Delegates discussed the current risks facing the global economy and the preparedness for policy co-ordination among the G20 countries. The meeting also studied possible policy options to enhance access to opportunities for all with a special focus on women, youth and small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The get-together followed a G20 symposium on enhancing access to opportunities that was held under the Saudi G20 presidency on Dec. 5 last year in Riyadh. Participants at the FWG symposium also discussed the role of the public and private sectors in leveraging technology and innovation to create jobs, and opportunities that promote sustainable and inclusive growth. The G20 FWG was established at the 2009 Pittsburgh summit in the US after world leaders agreed to launch a framework to lay out policies aimed at generating strong, sustainable, balanced, and inclusive global growth. Makkah launches project to improve checkpoints for pilgrims

Author: Zaynab KhojjiID: 1579109149559094500Wed, 2020-01-15 20:25 MAKKAH: The Makkah Region Development Authority (MRDA) has begun a modernization project of checkpoints for pilgrims undertaking Hajj and Umrah, which should reduce waiting times significantly, it has announced. The project was launched under instructions from Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, governor of Makkah and MRDA chairman, and the supervision of Prince Badr bin Sultan, deputy governor of Makkah. The security-control center on Al-Shumaisi Road, which links Makkah and Jeddah, is underdoing development and should be fully operational before Ramadan. Development work includes increasing the number of traffic lanes to 16, updating the center’s technological infrastructure to increase efficiency, and integrating several government services under one roof. Fifteen percent of the work has already been completed. MRDA spokesperson Jalal bin Abdul Jalil Kaaki said that the authority has also begun development of a security-control center in Al-Nawwariyah in northern Makkah, adding that the new service facilities at the improved centers will also benefit residents of Makkah. Those facilities —  at least in Al-Shumaisi — will include administrative offices, a mosque, a civil defense center, a Red Crescent center, and a building housing other government agencies. Saudi representatives attend International Olympic Committee meetings

Wed, 2020-01-15 00:35 RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s representatives to various commissions of International Olympic Committee (IOC) attended the IOC’s annual meetings in Lausanne, Switzerland this week. The meetings coincide with the Winter Youth Olympics, which are currently being held in Lausanne and end on Jan. 22. Two board members of the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee — Princess Reema bint Bandar (Women in Sports Commission) and Prince Fahd bin Jalawi bin Abdul Aziz bin Musaid (Public Affairs and Social Development Through Sports Commission) — represented the Kingdom. Saudi Arabia has three representatives in the IOC, with Prince Abdul Aziz bin Turki Al-Faisal on the Marketing Committee. Among the topics discussed during the Women in Sports Committee’s meeting were gender equality in sports, the participation of women in community sports, and the prevention of harassment. SPEEDREAD • Among the topics discussed during the event were gender equality in sports, the participation of women in community sports, and the prevention of harassment. • Saudi Arabia has made considerable recent progress in its efforts to encourage all segments of society to embrace sports as a way of life. “We work closely with all members of the Olympic family through the IOC Women in Sports Committee to support the participation of women at all levels of sports,” Princess Reema said after the meeting. “We discussed all the advances that have been achieved in this area, as well as some of the key challenges that are facing women currently.” She also expressed her delight that Saudi Arabia had made considerable recent progress in its efforts to encourage all segments of society “to embrace sports as a way of life.” Prince Jalawi said that, given Saudi Arabia’s preeminence in the region, the Kingdom has made its presence felt in the Olympic family. “At the Public Affairs and Social Development through Sport Committee, we work to harness the power of sports to serve all communities and help to build cultural bridges between them. Sport is a very powerful tool to realize these goals,” he said. Renovated historic mosques in Saudi Arabia reopen to worshippers after 6 decades

Wed, 2020-01-15 00:47 MAKKAH: Worshippers have started returning to five Saudi historic mosques restored to their former glory after being out of use for up to six decades. Preservation work on buildings in the Makkah and Al-Baha regions has been completed as part of phase one of the Mohammed bin Salman Project for Historical Mosques Renovation. Under the initiative, the crown prince aims to revitalize 130 mosques throughout the Kingdom using Saudi companies that specialize in heritage buildings. Jarir Al-Bajali and Suleiman mosques in Taif, along with Al-Malad, Al-Atawilah, and Al-Dhafir mosques in Al-Baha, are the latest to reopen their doors to worshippers after being closed to prayer gatherings for between 40 and 60 years. One of the revamped mosques, Jarir Al-Bajali, was established in the era of the Prophet Muhammad’s companion Jarir bin Abdullah Al-Bajali and is among the oldest places of worship of its kind in Makkah region. Covering 350 square meters, it was constructed in the Al-Sarat architectural style using irregular stones and with a ceiling made of juniper timber and concrete. It was used as a meeting place where people performed judiciary work, issued fatwas, completed marriage contracts, and resolved disputes, in addition to holding lectures and sermons. Taif’s Suleiman Mosque occupies 390 square meters and is one of the region’s most historically important landmarks. Accounts suggest that when returning from visiting his uncles in Bani Saad, the Prophet Muhammad made his companions stand on the mosque site where he said the Prophet Suleiman had camped. The mosque became an education beacon of the region but was later abandoned and fell into a state of neglect. HIGHLIGHT Preservation work on buildings in the Makkah and Al-Baha regions has been completed as part of phase one of the Mohammed bin Salman Project for Historical Mosques Renovation. Of the three mosques renovated in Al-Baha, Al-Malad can accommodate just 34 worshippers. It is located in Al-Malad village which is one of Al-Baha’s forts in its design. The village has two adjacent fortresses of architectural significance. The only mosque in the village, Al-Malad became a cultural and educational center for local people where they learned to write, studied the Qur’an, and attended lessons and lectures. It also served as an important social meeting point for villagers. The larger Al-Atawilah Mosque can house up to 130 worshippers and covers an area of 327 square meters. It is known for its heritage buildings, such as the forts of Al-Othman, Damas, and Al-Mashikha. One of the oldest historical buildings in the region, Al-Atawilah, also built in Al-Sarat style, was the only mosque in the town where Friday prayers were held. Al-Dhafir Mosque occupies 245 square meters and can take 88 worshippers. It too was a center for education and a popular meeting place for people from the town and neighboring villages. The newly opened prayer buildings in Makkah and Al-Baha are among 30 mosques in 10 Saudi regions renovated at a cost of more than SR50 million ($13 million) over 423 days in phase one of the crown prince’s project.
