Saudi residents welcome decision to waive COVID-19 tests at Bahrain border

Author: Fri, 2021-01-15 03:54 RIYADH: Residents of Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province have welcomed an announcement by Bahrain that people arriving in the country from Saudi Arabia via the King Fahd Causeway will no longer face a mandatory PCR test for COVID-19. However, all who wish to enter the country will need to provide evidence of a negative result from a PCR test carried out at an approved laboratory in Bahrain or the Kingdom within 72 hours of arrival. An original PCR certificate or a test result displayed through a mobile app will be accepted. Bahraini authorities also stressed the importance of all visitors adhering to precautionary health measures while in the country. The decision will take effect on Jan. 17 and is designed to make travel from Saudi Arabia easier, according to a report published by Bahrain’s official news agency. Residents of the Kingdom’s Eastern Province described the decision as a positive development. “The announcement came as a huge relief, as I have many relatives in Bahrain and I am doing a lot of business from Bahrain,” said Sameh Samir from Egypt, who works in Dammam. “Now I can visit the country with ease to meet my relatives and friends, and for my business as well.” Fakhruddin Ahmad, an Indian expatriate in Dammam, said: “The waiver will add billions of dollars to the Bahraini and Saudi economies. Following lifting of travel restrictions, thousands of visitors are expected to travel, leading to an anticipated rebound for the Kingdom’s tourism and hospitality sector. “Bahrain and Saudi Arabia have long-standing tourism and trade ties, with trade between two countries growing by 43 percent up to the third quarter of 2020, so opening the border will help boost the economy.” Businessman Hamad Al-Hammad, a member of the board of the Eastern Province Chamber of Commerce, said the move shows Bahrain’s trust in the efforts made by Saudi authorities to prevent the spread of the virus. “The procedures have been described as the best around the world and emphasize precautions and the provision of high-quality healthcare services,” he said. “The testing adopts the highest technical standards as well.” He noted that the Kingdom is one of the first countries to provide vaccines to nationals and residents alike, without exception, and added: “This fact reflects the humanitarian principles King Salman and the crown prince have adopted, and the great efforts they make to protect public health.” He predicted that the decision will have a positive effect on the economy because it will allow businesses to operate more easily and bilateral trade will increase further. “During the pandemic, the volume (of bilateral trade) increased by 12 percent and exceeded $2 billion in the first three quarters of 2020, which constituted a significant increase in the volume of trade between Bahrain and the Kingdom on an annual basis,” Al-Hammad said. Amir Khusroo, who lives in Alkhobar, said: “It is a good step. As an expatriate and a procurement (professional), it matters a lot to us. Our movements were confined due to all these regulations — now we can move and manage our shipments hassle-free.” Serajuddin Khan, a sales consultant in Dammam, said: “I appreciate the decision to open the causeway to travel to both countries, with Bahrain waiving the mandatory PCR test. It will enhance business, boost trade and will help give the economies of the two countries a further boost after the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. With visitor levels returning to prepandemic levels, the causeway will add more income to Bahrain’s economy. “We should appreciate both the countries as they have dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic very well to bring it under control. This happened because Saudi Arabia and Bahrain complied with the World Health Organization’s guidelines and took appropriate measures to control the spread of the virus.” Salem Balhamar, chairman of the Salem Balhamar Holding Group, said the decision by Bahrain will boost tourism and business activity between the two countries. “Many executive managers who live in Bahrain have been impacted by the pandemic,” he said. “Some of my projects were put on hold and some faltered as a result of it. I’ll travel to Bahrain immediately after the entry ports are open.” Main category: Saudi ArabiaTags: BahrainKing Fahd causewayCoronavirus Bahrain allows Qatar to use its airspace after dispute resolvedSaudi customs opens Salwa border crossing with Qatar

Meet the Saudi military engineers breaking gender barriers

Fri, 2021-01-15 04:06 RIYADH: A group of over 100 Saudi women have overcome gender barriers and contributed to the technological transformation of the Kingdom through their management of the Advanced Electronic Company’s (AEC) military factory. The team has gained expertise in manufacturing roles that support areas of national importance such as digital transformation, energy efficiency and the localization of military industries. They work on many key projects with advanced military equipment and electronic solutions such as assembling electronic components, operating complex machinery essential to the manufacturing process, producing and testing advanced systems such as laser optics, advanced screens, and optoelectronic devices. After being trained in military standards, the women also oversee the development of technical presentations and cost analysis, as well as managing plant performance to adhere to the AEC’s stringent quality control procedures. “As part of my role, I am responsible for supporting many of the manufacturing activities in the factory,” Shaza Khamis, a manufacturing engineer, told Arab News. “By applying time-study and work-measurement methods, I was able to implement efficient waste-free manufacturing techniques.” Her colleague Lana Owaidah, a manufacturing engineer, told Arab News that the women share a wonderful team spirit and feel that they contribute something important to the country. “I participate in setting up and operating the machines and processes, as well as adjusting the design of manufacturing tools and fixtures on the production line,” she said. She added that everyone on the team is proud of their work and strives to provide their best efforts to the company and the Kingdom. Ghadir Bin Jamaan, a production officer, said the factory’s success can be attributed to the employees’ desire to work according to the highest international standards. “My role is to supervise the control of production cells and ensure that the team has the skills necessary to perform each task accurately according to the designs and technical specifications provided,” she told Arab News. She said that she notices a strong sense of shared responsibility among the team. “Each team member has unique skills to add to the production line, and it is great to see everyone working together to achieve impressive results.” Reem Malak, the configuration management specialist at the factory, said that they are proud to show the world that Saudi female engineers can contribute to manufacturing and production processes alongside their male colleagues. “I am grateful to the AEC for all the support and training that I have received, as well as the opportunity that I have had to do this important work and contribute to a more energy-efficient future for the country and its people,” she added. Arab coalition intercepts, destroys Houthi drones targeting Saudi Arabia

Fri, 2021-01-15 11:53 DUBAI: The Arab coalition intercepted and destroyed three drones launched by the Houthi militia towards Saudi Arabia, state news agency SPA reported. The drones were detected and launched by the Iran-backed Houthi militia from Yemen’s Hodeidah province, Arab coalition spokesman Col. Turki Al-Malki said on Friday. He added that the Houthis continue to violate the Stockholm Agreement and the ceasefire in Hodeidah. They also continue to use Hodeidah province as a place for launching terrorist operations by firing ballistic missiles and drones, he said. He further said that the militants also take the province as a place for launching remotely piloted boat attacks, which constitute a regional and international security threat. The US State Department on Sunday announced Washington’s plans to designate the Houthi militia a terrorist organization and to include three of its leaders – Abdul Malik Al-Houthi, Abd Al-Khaliq Badr Al-Din Al-Houthi, and Abdullah Yahya Al-Hakim – on the global terrorists list. Al-Maliki indicated that the Arab coalition is implementing appropriate measures to deal with these extremist acts in accordance with international humanitarian law and its customary rules. He added that the coalition will continue to support the political efforts of the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General to Yemen Martin Griffiths to end the coup and reach a comprehensive political solution. DiplomaticQuarter: Indian ambassador inaugurates joint medical forum in Riyadh

Author: Thu, 2021-01-14 01:41 RIYADH: The Riyadh chapter of the Indo-Saudi Medical Forum (ISMF) was recently inaugurated at the Diplomatic Quarters by Ambassador of India Dr. Ausaf Sayeed. The ISMF will consist of prominent Indian and Saudi doctors, health experts, businessmen associated with the pharmaceutical sector and other stakeholders from the medical field. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Dr. Faisal Al-Sugair, president and CEO of the Saudi Center for International Strategic Partnerships; Dr. Ahmed Assiri, assistant supervisor of the Clinical Excellence General Directorate at the Ministry of Health; and Dr. Fawaz Al-Hussain, consultant and professor at the College of Medicine at King Saud University, who will also be the first president of the Riyadh chapter of the ISMF. Executive council members, city coordinators and members of the ISMF joined the inauguration ceremony, both in person and virtually. The idea for the ISMF was originally conceived by the then Indian consul general in Jeddah and now the ambassador of India in Riyadh to foster collaboration between the medical fraternities of India and Saudi Arabia. It strives to create an institutional structure for medical professionals from both countries to forge alliances and encourage cooperation in the fields of healthcare, medicine, pharmaceuticals and related sectors. The launch of the ISMF was rendered even more necessary because of the renewed focus on healthcare, especially after the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Across the globe, healthcare organizations are now enjoying a new direction and momentum. The success of the Jeddah chapter has paved the way for the revamping and upscaling of the ISMF to a pan-Saudi organization. The ISMF will be divided into three regional chapters — Jeddah, Dammam and Riyadh — which will each be led by regional executive councils. The Jeddah chapter was inaugurated by the Indian ambassador on Dec. 25, 2020, and the Dammam chapter will also be inaugurated in the next few months.   Main category: Saudi ArabiaTags: DiplomaticQuarter DiplomaticQuarter: Belgium on front line of coronavirus battle, says envoy to RiyadhDiplomaticQuarter: Bangladesh envoy lauds Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition’s works

Five-day fashion bootcamp to promote Saudi talent, entrepreneurs

Author: Thu, 2021-01-14 01:48 JEDDAH: A virtual bootcamp aimed at promoting entrepreneurial talent in Saudi Arabia’s fledgling fashion industry has opened for applicants. The Kingdom’s Fashion Commission launched the second phase of its incubation program as part of an initiative to boost cultural entrepreneurship in the country with the support of the Quality of Life scheme. One of 11 commissions established by the Ministry of Culture, the Fashion Commission’s program will run a series of workshops from Feb. 28 until March 4 addressed by top academic speakers, thought leaders, Saudi business figures, and international institutions involved in the fashion sector. Virtual bootcamp participants will learn how to develop their business projects, network, build partnerships, assess the market, and benefit from prototypes to cost-effectively bring their ideas to fruition. The program’s first-phase fashion hackathon started on Thursday and will run for three intensive days. Phases three and four will be announced over the coming weeks. The fashion hackathon will see 150 participants — chosen from 1,500 applications — divided into 33 teams compete to win a five-day trip to the Milan Fashion Week. HIGHLIGHT One of 11 commissions established by the Ministry of Culture, the Fashion Commission’s program will run a series of workshops from Feb. 28 until March 4 addressed by top academic speakers, thought leaders, Saudi business figures, and international institutions involved in the fashion sector. Saudi fashion designer and founder of luxury brand Hindamme, Mohammed Khoja, told Arab News that the ministry backed program would help to give fashion talent access to business partners, intensive practical learning, and mentors. “Programs such as this are vital in being able to build up the industry and in connecting the dots,” he said. He pointed out that the fashion industry was still very new to the Kingdom and had not received the support it needed, which was why such programs were so important in helping to grow the sector. “Within the Saudi fashion industry, we still face a number of challenges mainly due to this industry being relatively new and lacking structure. “This program will support designers and prospective investors to find mutual benefits and offer clearer pathways for careers in the rapidly growing fashion industry in Saudi Arabia,” he added. Applicants have until Jan. 18 to register for the fashion bootcamp via https://engage.moc.gov.sa/fashion_bootcamp. Saudi Interior Ministry warns against large social gatherings

Thu, 2021-01-14 01:55 JEDDAH: The Saudi Ministry of Interior renewed its warning against social gatherings and reminded people of the penalties against gatherings of more than 50 individuals as a precautionary measure against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The ministry uploaded an infographic to Twitter stating: “Gatherings for social purposes such as funerals, parties and the like, for more than 50 people violate preventive measures against COVID-19.” The infographic reconfirmed that the initial penalty for an establishment or person who instigated the violation is a SR40,000 ($10,600) fine, while anyone in attendance or causing the crowding will pay SR5,000. If there is a second violation, the penalty will be doubled to SR80,000. Those who are in attendance or instigating the event will pay up to SR10,000. For a third violation, the penalty is doubled and they will be referred to the public prosecution. If the violating institute is in the private sector — and a repeating offender — it will be closed for three months. In a second incident, the establishment will be closed for six months. The ministry urges those who witness any violations to call 911 for those in Makkah and Riyadh, and 999 for other regions. Meanwhile, the Health Ministry said everyone should create an online account on the Sehhaty app to get the vaccine. It added that family members cannot get appointments for each other. “An independent account is created for the wife and other beneficiaries in the Sehhaty app, except for children who are under 18, who can be affiliated with the head of the family,” the ministry tweeted. Meanwhile, a source in the Interior Ministry said citizens were being warned against traveling to a number of countries without obtaining prior permission. This comes following the statement on Jan. 8 allowing citizens to travel outside the Kingdom starting from March 31. The list of countries includes Libya, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, Iran, Turkey, Armenia, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Afghanistan, Venezuela, Belarus and any other countries in which the pandemic has not yet been controlled or the spread of the mutated strain of the virus has been evident. The ministry said Saudi citizens who are in these countries or expecting to travel to them should urgently register at an embassy. It also called on citizens wishing to travel to the permitted countries to exercise caution and stay away from busy areas, and to follow all precautionary measures. Saudi Arabia has reported four new COVID-19-related deaths. The death toll now stands at 6,304. A total of 175 new cases were reported, meaning 364,271 people have now contracted the disease. There are 1,954 active cases, 307 of them are in a critical condition. In addition, 156 new patients had recovered, bringing the total number of recoveries in the Kingdom to 356,013. Saudi Arabia warns against travel to countries where COVID-19 ‘not under control’

Wed, 2021-01-13 18:06 LONDON: Saudi Arabia’s interior ministry warned citizens on Wednesday against travel to a number of countries without obtaining permission. People wishing to travel from March 31 onwards should obtain permission prior to traveling to Libya, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, Iran, Turkey, Armenia, Somalia, DR Congo, Afghanistan, Venezuela, Belarus and any other country where the coronavirus pandemic is not under control or that has a variant of the virus spreading through it. The statement said the decision had been taken in light of the lack of stability in specific countries, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and the detection of a new variant of the virus. The ministry called on citizens currently in any of the specified countries and those who will travel there at a later date to register at the Kingdom’s embassy. The ministry added that citizens travelling to other countries should be careful and should not travel to unstable areas or areas where the spread of COVID-19 is rife.
