PM Lee Hsien Loong to be Senior Minister, Cabinet reshuffle in May: DPM Wong

Outgoing Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will be taking on the role of Senior Minister, continuing his service in Cabinet, Deputy PM Lawrence Wong said in a doorstop with the media at the Ministry of Communications and Information on Tuesday (April 16). «It has never been the case that when there is a leadership transition, all the older ministers step down at the same time,» DPM Wong said.  «Instead, they continue to contribute in different ways while making room for the younger ones to step up.» This comes after the announcement on Monday that Wong will become Prime Minister on May 15, taking the reins from Lee.  The 51-year-old will be sworn in at the Istana on May 15 at 8pm. But this isn't just a significant moment for Wong, however. He also told media that this upcoming ceremony isn't just for him, but also «for a new Cabinet». He expects that other ministers will continue to serve in their respective portfolios.

SINGAPORE - A group of three people who held up a banner at Gardens by the Bay calling for an end to Singapore’s arms trade with Israel are under investigation, said the police. In a video clip of the demonstration circulated on several Instagram accounts, the three protestors can be seen standing on the OCBC Skyway and unfurling a banner that said: “End SG - Israel arms trade”. Singaporean adults need to pay $10 to enter the OCBC Skyway while the ticket for foreigners costs $14. The incident took place on the evening of April 15, according to a statement issued by the protestors. The identities and nationalities of the three protestors remain unclear. In response to queries, the police said reports had been lodged, while a spokesman for Gardens by the Bay said it is aware of the incident and a police report has been filed. However, the spokesman said he could not comment further as police investigations are ongoing.

$3b money laundering case: Third accused convicted, gets 13 months’ jail

SINGAPORE – Chinese national Wang Baosen has been sentenced to 13 months in jail, the third accused in Singapore’s largest money laundering case to be convicted following a probe that started in 2021. As part of his plea offer, the 32-year-old has forfeited his assets worth $8 million believed to be benefits from illegal gambling offences abroad. With one-third remission, he may be out by early May. Baosen pleaded guilty on April 16 to two charges. Six other charges were taken into consideration. He admitted to using over $1.4 million from a company, Hornet Bee International Trading, to pay for 10 per cent of the purchase price of an upscale condominium unit in Orchard Road. Baosen also admitted to possessing nearly $600,000 in an HSBC bank account in Singapore, with the monies suspected to be proceeds from illicit gambling offences. Deputy Public Prosecutor Foo Shi Hao, who sought 13 to 15 months in jail for Baosen, said his case bears many similarities to that of Su Haijin, one of the 10 foreigners arrested in the money laundering probe.

All employees can ask for FWA from Dec 1: One working mum at McDonald's shares how she cares for family, upskills under flexi arrangement

Not many people love their jobs, but Rumiyati Razali is one of the rare few who do. And a major reason why the frontline crew member with McDonald's is passionate about her job has to do with her flexible work arrangements (FWAs) with her employer. The 50-year-old mother's working hours are determined on a flexi-shift basis, which means she can request to be rostered at certain times and days based on her availability. As a guest experience leader at the McDonald's outlet in Bukit Batok West, Rumiyati's role involves customer service — from assisting people with using the self-ordering kiosks to handling complaints. Speaking to AsiaOne during a company visit to the McDonald's Ridout Tea Garden outlet in Queensway on Monday (April 15), Rumiyati said the flexi-shift arrangements has allowed her to care for her 7-year-old daughter and elderly parents while making time to further her education. She recently completed a 10-month SkillsFuture-certified diploma in retail while continuing to work full-time.

Losing both your credit cards and money while abroad is a traveller's worst nightmare. And that's what happened to a Singaporean man who had his credit cards stolen while holidaying in Japan. This traveller, who only wanted to be known as Lee, shared about his experience on TikTok last Saturday (April 13): «My two credit cards were stolen while I was in Tokyo, Japan, and were misused for a total of three transactions amounting to $11,600 by the thief.» Lee told AsiaOne that he realised that his credit cards were missing after receiving a transaction alert from a bank notifying him of an unauthorised transaction.  Lee shared screenshots of the fraudulent transactions made on Apr 10 on his Standard Chartered Simply Cash Credit Card which showed three purchases made at two major department stores in Tokyo — Mitsukoshi Ginza and Matsuya Ginza — amounting to 1,311,049 yen ($11,600). «What surprised me the most was that the second credit card which was left unused in the trip was also missing,» Lee told AsiaOne.

Did the escalating Israel-Hamas conflict — aggravated by Iran's assault on Israel over the weekend — expedite Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's handover to Deputy PM Lawrence Wong? Two political analysts whom AsiaOne spoke to appear to think so. It was announced on Monday (April 15) that Wong, 51, would be sworn in as Singapore's fourth prime minister on May 15. Lee said at the People's Action Party (PAP) convention last November that he would hand over leadership by the party's 70th birthday in November this year. Singapore Management University law professor Eugene Tan said: «The May handover strikes me as being on an accelerated timeline.» He added: «With the global geopolitical situation deteriorating, especially with Iran’s attack on Israel, the thinking of the leaders appear [to be] that it is better to seek a fresh mandate.» Nydia Ngiow, managing director at strategic advisory firm BowerGroupAsia, echoed Tan's sentiments.

Zhang Yatian (transliteration) thought he was being a good Samaritan, but ended up becoming a victim of a slashing instead.  The 80-year-old retiree was left with several wounds on both his arms after he tried to break up a fight between two men at the hawker centre near Block 82 Redhill Lane last Saturday night (April 13), reported Shin Min Daily News.  He happened to be in the area when he spotted the two men arguing. They looked like they were about to fight, he added.  «I don't know what I said triggered him, but one of them started scolding me instead,» Zhang said.  Zhang thought the matter was settled after one of the men went home, but the latter returned carrying a 15cm-long knife.  He slashed Zhang, leaving him with a 6cm cut on his left arm, and smaller cuts on his right arm.  When a reporter from Shin Min arrived at the hawker centre after the incident, seven or eight police cars were parked in the area.  Police officers were also seen conducting investigations.  When contacted by AsiaOne, the police said that they received a call for assistance at about 9.30pm last Saturday.

Singapore to set up new facility which trains global maritime personnel in new low-emission fuels

Singapore will set up a facility to train international maritime personnel in the use of cleaner fuels such as methanol and ammonia, as part of the Republic's move towards these alternative ship fuels. The Maritime Energy Training Facility (METF) is expected to prompt industry players to invest in related training facilities and solutions in Singapore as well so as to tap this growth area, said the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). Announcing this at the opening ceremony of Singapore Maritime Week on Monday (Apr 15), Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat said: «Seafarers and other maritime personnel can acquire the necessary skills for safe handling, bunkering, and incident management of alternative fuels and low- or zero-emission vessels.» The maritime industry has signalled «strong demand» for common training facilities in this area, said MPA. Most ships burn fuel oil, a fossil fuel, but methanol and ammonia are emerging as lower-carbon alternatives. The facility will cover those two fuels for a start, though hydrogen may be added in the future.

Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, 51, will become Singapore's fourth Prime Minister on May 15, 2024.  Wong will be sworn into office at 8pm that day.  In a statement to the press on Monday (April 15), Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said he would relinquish his role in a month's time.  He will also formally advise the President to appoint Wong to succeed him.  PM Lee, 72, said last year that he would step down by November 2024 if all goes well, and before the next general election (GE). The next GE has to be held by November 2025. In April 2022, Wong was endorsed as the leader of the ruling People's Action Party's (PAP) fourth-generation (4G) team, paving the way for him to be Singapore's next prime minister.  The decision was then endorsed by all government MPs in a party caucus, said PM Lee, who is secretary-general of the PAP. Wong had emerged as the top choice of 15 out of the 19 stakeholders involved.

'They can buy up to $5,000 at one go': Some money changers run out of Korean won after it falls to new low against Singapore dollar

With the cherry blossom season in full bloom, many Singaporeans may be heading to South Korea. And with the won dipping to a 10-year low against the Singapore dollar, these travellers have even more to cheer about. The won had already been gradually sliding against the Singapore dollar in the past month, according to foreign exchange website xe.com. At 5.30pm last Friday (April 12), the exchange rate was 1018.16 won. At the time of publication, it is 1016.07 won. Some money changers are seeing more customers buying the Korean won and in larger sums, with a handful saying they are selling out the currency early in the day. The owner of Fiat Money Changer, located at The Arcade in Raffles Place, told AsiaOne that he has observed a spike in the number of customers buying the won.  «Depending on the day, we can even sell out [the won] by 3pm or 4pm,» he said, adding that the amounts changed are also higher. Currently, he has no plans to stock more won.

'I don't dare to go home early': Yishun resident living in fear, claims female neighbour harassing him for past 5 years

Home is meant to be a safe space for rest - but this woman may have turned her neighbour's haven into a waking nightmare. A resident in Yishun has claimed that his neighbour has constantly harassed him for the past five years, Shin Min Daily News reported on Sunday (April 14). The resident, surnamed Zhao, told Shin Min that a female neighbour surnamed Liang has hurled insults at him, vandalised his door, thrown liquids and garbage at the doorstep of his home in a HDB block along Yishun Street 22 for half a decade. Although Zhao said he has contacted the police more than 20 times, her harassment has not stopped so he installed a security camera outside his home in hopes of collecting evidence. This allowed him a bit of room to breathe, as Liang reportedly stopped throwing liquids and rubbish at the 43-year-old's door. But other forms of harassment didn't stop, causing Zhao grief. In footage seen by Shin Min, Liang can be seen striking Zhao's metal gate, pelting him with vulgarities. To make matters worse, the woman seems bent on targeting only Zhao, he told Shin Min.

Little red dot goes big: Singapore to showcase ‘dreams’ in Japan’s ‘dream island’

The little red dot makes a scaled up 17-metre-tall transformation for the Singapore Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka. Spanning almost two years of planning, Singapore is the first of 64 countries in the world to begin construction of our pavilion at the expo. Aptly named the Dream Sphere, this installation is set to be the centrepiece of the Singapore Pavilion at next year's edition of the world expo. In a media preview held last Monday (April 8), Singapore Tourism Board's Executive Director for World Expo and Special Projects, Carrie Kwik outlines how the pavilion will «share the narrative of Singapore's very bold and contemporary spirit.» With Singapore's tagline being Where Dreams take Shape, the making of the dream sphere is a collaborative effort in visualising the nation's aspirations. Of which the pavilion tells the story of building a liveable sustainable city, that would take care of all who live on the island. The pavilion also aims to reach out to at least 1 million attendees by the end of the six-month-long event.

'Popcorn lung', cancer: Experts warn of dangers as vaping among youth in Singapore spikes

SINGAPORE – Doctors treating respiratory issues are not always aware if their patients have been vaping. Therefore, cases are not tracked systematically at hospitals because these patients are not always willing to share their vaping history. With the clampdown on vaping and the authorities stepping up checks, even in public hot spots such as the Central Business District, parks, malls and bars, patients with breathing issues caused by vaping are aware and are keeping mum. Dr Sewa Duu Wen, who heads the department of respiratory and critical care medicine at Singapore General Hospital, told The Straits Times about one case of a patient who had been smoking e-cigarettes. “We have reported (a case) where a patient developed respiratory failure due to abnormal build-up of protein and fatty material within the air sac (in the lungs) after having started vaping.” He said the man underwent an uncommon treatment procedure, termed whole lung lavage, at the hospital. Sometimes called lung washing, the treatment is a specific procedure that uses saline solution to “wash out” the lungs.

As the Singapore population ages, the demand for suitable care solutions for seniors has become more pressing. They want to hold on to their independence but will require some form of caregiving. Here's one senior citizen, who spoke in Hokkien, describing how she wants to live out her golden years. Madam Liew Thye Moi, 103 I have five children — three sons and two daughters. One son died in 2020. My husband, who died in 1981, was a civil servant. When my children were young, we lived in an attap house in Jalan Afifi in Paya Lebar. When I was younger, I worked as a confinement nanny for the female employees of Ban Hin Lee Bank (which went on to merge with other banks to form CIMB). I was also a babysitter.  In my 50s, I moved out of the attap house to a four-room flat in Sims Drive. That house is under my son's name. In 1988, when I was 67 years old, I rented a two-bedroom flat in Circuit Road. By then, my children were married and had their own homes.

Residents in a Buangkok HDB block have been left fuming following the installation of exhaust pipes on the rooftop of a neighbouring mall. One resident surnamed Sun complained about the smell of oil and smoke emanating from the exhaust pipes which are visible from her flat window.  The 44-year-old who lives at Block 999B Buangkok Crescent told Shin Min Daily News that her home faces Buangkok Square shopping mall.  She purchased the high-rise unit early last year, and claimed that there was no such smell when renovations were ongoing then.  The eight exhaust pipes on the mall's rooftop were install to get rid of the fumes from the F&B establishments inside the mall.  «Every time I open the window there's an oil smell. It forces me to shut the windows or open them slightly.»  Sun installed an air purifier in her home, and has placed several fragrance bags around the house to combat the smell.  She has also made complaints through the OneService app, but was told that the installation of the exhaust pipes comply with regulations as they did not directly face her flat.

There was no missing this wake, especially at night. A Sengkang resident was dismayed by the number of LED wreaths at the wake near her home that far exceeded the limit set in the guidelines by the National Environment Agency (NEA) and Association of Funeral Directors Singapore (AFD). Stomp contributor Carol shared videos and photos of rows and rows of such wreaths, made of artificial flowers and LED lights, around Block 250A Compassvale Street on April 2 and 3. «Take a look at the extravagance of these LED wreaths,» said the Stomp contributor. «It was announced in June 2022 that the limit for LED wreaths is 10, but this wake just below my flat had 50 and counting. »Additionally, it was past 10pm. The lights were not turned off and reflected off the buildings into our homes. "As seen in the video, there were wires hanging all over the place to tap electricity from all the surrounding blocks. How much electricity was wasted by these LED wreaths, which can also cause a short circuit and start a fire, especially on rainy days.

SIA and Scoot to use alternative flight paths following drone strikes by Iran on Israel

SINGAPORE - Singapore Airlines (SIA) and budget carrier Scoot have stopped flying over Iranian airspace, after Iran launched its first-ever direct attack on Israeli territory on April 13. The Israeli military said Iran has fired more than 200 drones and missiles at Tel Aviv since April 13. A spokesperson for SIA told The Straits Times that as a precaution, both SIA and Scoot will use alternative flight paths with effect from 1pm on April 13. The SIA Group said its top priority is the safety of customers and its employees.  «We are closely monitoring the situation in the Middle East, and we will adjust our flight paths as needed,» the spokesperson said. The drone strikes followed Iran's vow to retaliate over what it called an Israeli strike on its Damascus consulate on April 1, which killed seven members of its elite Revolutionary Guards, including two generals.

'Rain or shine, we can come and train': National players welcome all-weather courts at Kallang Tennis Hub

Singapore is no stranger to unpredictable weather — a sunny day can turn rainy very quickly. Over the years, our national tennis players have been hit with delays and cancellations in their training due to the fickle skies.  With the opening of the new Kallang Tennis Hub (KTH) on Monday (April 15), however, the weather can no longer put a damper on the players' spirits. That is because the four-storey, 24,514 sq m building — their new training ground — boasts seven indoor courts in air-conditioned halls.  Previously, the national team trained at the Kallang Tennis Centre, where the courts are not sheltered. During a media tour of the premises on April 12, national player Audrey Tong said that the highlight of KTH is the covered courts. «This means that rain or shine, we can come and train,» added the 17-year-old after her first training session at the new courts. «Previously, when it was pouring, we had to postpone our training. This facility makes it a lot easier for us to get more hours on the court and make sure we optimise our training time.»

Korean convenience chain Emart24 under probe in Singapore over employees’ unpaid salaries

South Korean convenience store chain Emart24 Singapore is under probe for allegedly not paying its employees their wages. Responding to queries on April 12, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and the Tripartite Alliance for Dispute Management (TADM) in a joint statement said TADM received claims for unpaid salaries from 15 former Emart24 Singapore employees. TADM is helping the workers, and five of them have been able to reach an agreement with Emart24, the statement said. They are now being repaid after mediation efforts by TADM, it added. “TADM is in the process of scheduling mediation sessions for the remaining workers,” it said. It added that affected employees who need employment assistance have been referred to the NTUC Employment and Employability Institute. Emart24 debuted in Singapore to much fanfare in December 2022, but abruptly shut all three outlets in March 2024. The outlets were in Jurong Point and Nex shopping centres and Margaret Market in Queenstown.

A man who allegedly forged a VIP ticket and a Singapore Sports Hub staff pass to enter a Bruno Mars concert has been hauled to court. Karl Phillippe Njiomo Tengueu, 23, a Cameroonian, faces six charges in total – two charges of forgery, and one count each of criminal trespass, attempted criminal trespass, cheating and attempted cheating. American pop star Bruno Mars performed in Singapore at the National Stadium, which is part of Singapore Sports Hub, on April 3, April 5 and April 6. Tengueu has been remanded since April 6. His case was mentioned in court on April 12. Charge sheets said that on April 3 at around 5.45pm, the opening night of Mars’ concert, he forged a Singapore Sports Hub staff pass and a VIP ticket. He allegedly used these two items to cheat Singapore Sports Hub into allowing him to enter the concert and to access the concert’s VIP area. Two days later, on April 5 at about 8pm, he allegedly attempted to enter Mars’ second show by claiming he had a valid Singapore Sports Hub staff pass. However, this second attempt failed. Court documents did not state how he was arrested.

'Go ahead and lodge a complaint': Stall vendor and diner argue over size of scallops in $6 soup

A woman was left shell-shocked by the measly portions in her $6 meal from a food court in Toa Payoh. Stomp contributor IK visited the spinach soup stall at Koufu food court in HDB Hub on Apr 9. She ordered a set of Signature Spinach Soup, which came with various ingredients including scallops, for $6. IK told Stomp: «At this price point, I would not expect good quality seafood. But the picture speaks for itself. »When I showed the photo of my meal to the staff at the counter, he pointed to the bits in the spoon and asked me, 'What is that?' «I told him those were the scallops that he gave me. That was when he started to get defensive and said scallops come in various sizes, some small some big. »I told him it was ok but they should let customers know that they have smaller scallops today. He said they cannot tell all their customers.« According to IK, the stall vendor told her to »go ahead and lodge a complaint", and then asked her to leave.

Singapore and France working towards stronger ties with Comprehensive Strategic Partnership ahead of 60th anniversary of relations

PARIS — Singapore and France will work towards stronger ties with a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) ahead of 2025, the 60th anniversary of relations between the two countries. The announcement came after a working dinner between Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and his host, French President Emmanuel Macron, on April 11. The upgrade in relations to a CSP reflects the multifaceted co-operation between both countries and the joint desire to develop a forward-looking framework for co-operation in new sectors like the digital economy, said a Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement. Singapore already has a CSP with Australia — a broad-ranging agreement covering the five pillars of economics and trade, defence and foreign affairs, science and innovation, the digital economy, and people-to-people. During their meeting, DPM Wong and Macron noted that bilateral co-operation between their countries had deepened since the joint declaration elevating relations from an enhanced partnership to a strategic partnership was signed in October 2012.

'Every community in Singapore is equal': Shanmugam on country's commitment to protect all minorities

Singapore is committed to protecting all minority communities living in the country and they include the Muslim and Jewish communities, said Minister for Home Affairs and Law K. Shanmugam on April 11. He noted that sentiments against Israel arising from the Gaza conflict could affect the perception of Jewish communities around the world, but pledged that the Government would insulate and protect Singapore’s Jewish community from such impact as much as possible. Speaking at an event organised by the Jewish Welfare Board to celebrate the advent of Passover, he said: “We have made a clear commitment to protect all our minorities which, in Singapore’s context, include Muslim and Jewish communities, and we take a firm view against any expression of violence, and obviously any actual violence.” “There is a reason why a Cabinet minister is here, speaking with you – to send a message to everyone that every community in Singapore is equal and will be protected,” he added.  Passover, the most widely observed Jewish festival around the world, begins at sundown on April 22.

This made my day: Man surprises dad with air tickets to New Zealand on Hari Raya

It is customary for Muslims to give out duit raya (Raya money) on Hari Raya Puasa but one man decided to gift his father with something special instead — flight tickets to New Zealand.  Armand Izzaq Shaqur, 26, took to TikTok on Wednesday (April 10) sharing a video of him surprising his father with two air tickets to New Zealand on Hari Raya.  «Surprising my father who has never been out of Asia, with two tickets to New Zealand,» Armand wrote in his post.  Hari Raya Puasa marks the end of the Muslim fasting month, and is a day when many Muslims celebrate together with their extended families and partake in large family meals together. Wanting to make this Hari Raya extra memorable for this father, Armand wrote in his post: «Dad has always dreamt of going to New Zealand, figured it was time to make a life-long dream come true.»

Claws out: Staff at Pioneer coffee shop tussle over pepper crabs

Tempers flared and a fight broke out in a Pioneer coffee shop over pepper crabs. Three people, employees of the zichar stall and drink stall there, were filmed brawling on April 5. A clip of the incident was later posted on social media, generating a flurry of comments.  Han Yumei (transliteration), who works at the zichar stall, told Shin Min Daily News that a female drink stall assistant ordered two pepper crabs for $80 on April 4. It was meant to be a treat for her supervisor. She asked for the food to be ready for collection by 6.30pm the next day.  10 minutes before collection, however, Zhuang Anqi, the drink stall supervisor's wife, told Han that she wanted female crabs.  «She walked into the kitchen where my colleague was preparing the order and warned me not to give her crabs that were not fresh,» Han recounted.  Offended by Zhuang's words, Han retorted: «Have I ever sold you stale crabs?»  The pair started to get physical, and this caught the attention of Zhuang's husband.

Clubbers found $350 bottle of gin gone after dancing, club says manager 'tried his best' to help

You can't expect everyone at the club to be good, it seems. A group of friends paid $350 for a bottle of gin at an Orchard Road club only for it to disappear while they were on the dance floor. What made it worse was the response of the staff at Drip in Concorde Shopping Mall, according to Stomp contributor Rei, who said it happened during the wee hours of March 30. «My friends and I went to Drip at around midnight and were recommended to get a bottle,» recounted the Stomp contributor. «We decided it would make the most sense. So we got Hendrick's Gin and were asked to pay $350 for five people.» After getting a table, the friends made a drink and went dancing on the dance floor. "We came back 15 to 20 minutes later and realised our bottle was gone. My two male friends tried to talk to the bodyguard and were told it was none of their responsibility. They tried to talk to the manager, but no one was helping. So my other female friend and I tried to talk to the manager again.
