SINGAPORE — Some residents at Block 131B Kim Tian Road woke up on April 17 to find that their water supply had been cut off. The disruption, which lasted at least six hours, was caused by a burst underground pipe, a spokesperson for the Tanjong Pagar Town Council said in response to queries. The spokesperson added that 16 units from the second to fifth floors of the block were affected by the incident. The other floors in the 30-storey Housing Board block, as well as the other blocks in the estate, were not affected. Shin Min Daily News reported that a resident noticed the outage at 5am on April 17. The town council spokesperson told The Straits Times that the water supply was restored by 11am that same day, after contractors made a «temporary connection» to the water supply for the affected units. PUB and town council staff distributed bags of water to residents from 8am, the spokesperson said, adding that contractors also installed water taps for residents to draw water near the rubbish chute area from the ground floor to the fifth.

The next time you're at a Kopitiam food court, the person preparing your order could be the big boss himself. We're talking about Henry Chu, the CEO of FairPrice Group's Food Services Business, which runs the Kopitiam chain and the Heavenly Wang eateries.  «To truly understand someone, you have to walk a mile in their shoes,» goes his mantra. To put himself in his employees' shoes, Chu, who became CEO in December 2022, works like a regular employee at one of the Kopitiam outlets once a month.  There are more than 100 Kopitiam food courts islandwide. And Chu is not afraid to get his hands dirty — he will wash the dishes and clear the tables if he has to. He also helps out at new stalls which are short-staffed. Speaking to 8world at the Kopitiam food court at FairPrice Hub in Joo Koon, Chu recounted his most memorable experience while working alongside his employees at a Heavenly Wang outlet right after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Back in a new spot? Illegal mobile petrol station captured on video at Woodlands car park

Have illegal mobile petrol stations made a comeback? The authorities have previously cracked down on operators who sold illegal diesel in Tampines and Pioneer. A Malaysian-registered lorry was also spotted peddling diesel in Taman Jurong last year. But it appears that these mobile fuel stations may now be operating at a new location. A YouTube video uploaded by SG Road Vigilante on Monday (April 15) shows a Malaysian-registered truck and Singapore-registered lorry parked closely to each other and connected by a white hose. Two men are standing next to the Malaysian lorry. The video caption states that this took place at a car park for heavy vehicles in Woodlands. Speaking to Shin Min Daily News at the car park, a lorry driver surnamed Hong said that Malaysian lorry drivers have been running mobile fuel stations there for some time.

Cordlife lodges police report against ex-employees for potential wrongdoings

SINGAPORE — Cordlife's board of directors has lodged a police report on April 17 over potential wrongdoings, amid an internal probe. Processes at the cord blood banking company have been in the spotlight after it was revealed on Nov 30, 2023, that cryopreserved CBUs (cord blood units) in seven of its 22 storage tanks were exposed to suboptimal storage temperatures. In one of the seven tanks, 2,200 cord blood units were rendered unsuitable for stem cell transplants. Cordlife said in the filing: « Based on the preliminary findings of internal investigations conducted by an external consultant engaged by the COI (the Committee of Inquiry, which are still ongoing) and the information available, the COI is of the view that it has uncovered preliminary evidence of potential wrongdoings involving mostly former employees of the group in connection with the Tank A incident.» In a bourse filing on April 18, the company said it had convened a COI to conduct internal investigations into why about 2,200 cord blood units in Tank A were damaged.

Tangkak Beef Noodles is known, among other things, for its deliciously thick slices of beef - but perhaps they aren't quite as thick as this woman's skin, if netizens are to be believed. A woman has earned the ire of netizens after using her body to 'chope' a parking lot in Malaysia, holding it for a Singapore-registered car, according to a video uploaded to SG Road Vigilante last Saturday (April 13). In the video, a car turns into a parking lot right outside Tangkak Beef Noodles in Kluang, Malaysia, but stops when the driver notices a woman standing in the lot. The woman, holding an umbrella in the rain, is quick to wave her hand as the car approaches, shooing the driver away as she stands her ground, refusing to move. She also motions to indicate disapproval as the driver tries to park, denying the driver from parking in the lot. Later, an image of a Singapore-registered car is shown in the video, presumably the car that took the lot instead. Her actions enraged many online with some specifically addressing her «kiasu-ism (Slang for a scared-to-lose behaviour)».

East Coast road rage case: Cyclist who clung onto car bonnet likely affected by brain tumour, says lawyer

SINGAPORE – A cyclist who held onto a car bonnet during a row with a driver on East Coast Road on June 2, 2023, was diagnosed with brain tumour shortly after the incident, and the disease likely affected her behaviour, her lawyer said. Nicolette Tan Shi-en, 32, who was employed as a lawyer at the time, pleaded guilty on April 17 to a charge of causing harassment to the driver, Elaine Michele Ow, 49. Ow pleaded guilty on Feb 15 to one charge of committing a rash act endangering the safety of Tan. She will be sentenced on May 14. Tan admitted to stopping her bicycle in front of the car, confronting Ow and opening a car door. A second charge of obstructing traffic will be taken into consideration for Tan’s sentencing on May 25. Tan’s lawyer Mr Rajan Sanjiv Kumar told the court on April 17 – citing a psychiatrist’s report – that the onset of the tumour in the frontal region of his client’s brain had highly likely influenced her behaviour that day. Mr Rajan, who sought a fine of no more than $2,000, said in mitigation that the location of the tumour may have caused his client to suffer from personality changes and impaired judgment.

SINGAPORE – Two men were targeted in separate scam attempts in March that would have seen them lose more than $3 million, had it not been for the intervention of their banks and the police’s Anti-Scam Centre (ASC). Both cases involved scammers impersonating as government officials, said the police in a media statement on April 16. In one case, a 52-year-old was informed by a scammer posing as a senior police inspector that he was under investigation, and that he had to transfer a sum of $200,000 every day over a period of two weeks to various bank accounts for the purpose of “inspection and verification”. DBS Bank’s anti-mule team detected that something was amiss when the victim deposited a cheque of $500,000 to the account provided by the scammer. The bank immediately put a hold on the funds and surfaced this case to ASC who informed the victim he had fallen prey to a scam. The cheque was stopped by DBS Bank, and the intervention prevented further losses totalling $2.9 million. In the second case, a 76-year-old was contacted by a scammer who posed as a bank staff, and informed that his identity was being misused.

But this isn't just a significant moment for Wong, however. He also told media that this upcoming ceremony isn't just for him, but also «for a new Cabinet». $3b money laundering case: Third accused convicted, gets 13 months’ jail

SINGAPORE – Chinese national Wang Baosen has been sentenced to 13 months in jail, the third accused in Singapore’s largest money laundering case to be convicted following a probe that started in 2021. As part of his plea offer, the 32-year-old has forfeited his assets worth $8 million believed to be benefits from illegal gambling offences abroad. With one-third remission, he may be out by early May. Baosen pleaded guilty on April 16 to two charges. Six other charges were taken into consideration. He admitted to using over $1.4 million from a company, Hornet Bee International Trading, to pay for 10 per cent of the purchase price of an upscale condominium unit in Orchard Road. Baosen also admitted to possessing nearly $600,000 in an HSBC bank account in Singapore, with the monies suspected to be proceeds from illicit gambling offences. Deputy Public Prosecutor Foo Shi Hao, who sought 13 to 15 months in jail for Baosen, said his case bears many similarities to that of Su Haijin, one of the 10 foreigners arrested in the money laundering probe.

Not many people love their jobs, but Rumiyati Razali is one of the rare few who do. And a major reason why the frontline crew member with McDonald's is passionate about her job has to do with her flexible work arrangements (FWAs) with her employer. The 50-year-old mother's working hours are determined on a flexi-shift basis, which means she can request to be rostered at certain times and days based on her availability. As a guest experience leader at the McDonald's outlet in Bukit Batok West, Rumiyati's role involves customer service — from assisting people with using the self-ordering kiosks to handling complaints. Speaking to AsiaOne during a company visit to the McDonald's Ridout Tea Garden outlet in Queensway on Monday (April 15), Rumiyati said the flexi-shift arrangements has allowed her to care for her 7-year-old daughter and elderly parents while making time to further her education. She recently completed a 10-month SkillsFuture-certified diploma in retail while continuing to work full-time.

Did the escalating Israel-Hamas conflict — aggravated by Iran's assault on Israel over the weekend — expedite Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's handover to Deputy PM Lawrence Wong? Two political analysts whom AsiaOne spoke to appear to think so. It was announced on Monday (April 15) that Wong, 51, would be sworn in as Singapore's fourth prime minister on May 15. Lee said at the People's Action Party (PAP) convention last November that he would hand over leadership by the party's 70th birthday in November this year. Singapore Management University law professor Eugene Tan said: «The May handover strikes me as being on an accelerated timeline.» He added: «With the global geopolitical situation deteriorating, especially with Iran’s attack on Israel, the thinking of the leaders appear [to be] that it is better to seek a fresh mandate.» Nydia Ngiow, managing director at strategic advisory firm BowerGroupAsia, echoed Tan's sentiments.

The Maritime Energy Training Facility (METF) is expected to prompt industry players to invest in related training facilities and solutions in Singapore as well so as to tap this growth area, said the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). Announcing this at the opening ceremony of Singapore Maritime Week on Monday (Apr 15), Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat said: «Seafarers and other maritime personnel can acquire the necessary skills for safe handling, bunkering, and incident management of alternative fuels and low- or zero-emission vessels.» The maritime industry has signalled «strong demand» for common training facilities in this area, said MPA. Most ships burn fuel oil, a fossil fuel, but methanol and ammonia are emerging as lower-carbon alternatives. The facility will cover those two fuels for a start, though hydrogen may be added in the future.

'I accept this responsibility with humility': DPM Wong on undertaking role as Singapore's PM

Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said he accepts the role as Singapore's head of government «with humility».  Wong, 51, made a Facebook post on Monday (April 15) following Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's announcement that he'll relinquish his role on May 15. Lee said he will also formally advise the President to appoint Wong to succeed him.  «I am honoured to be asked to undertake this new responsibility as the Prime Minister of Singapore,» said Wong on his Facebook post.  The Minister for Finance said he wanted to contribute to the Singapore story when he entered politics in 2011, but never expected then to be asked to serve as Prime Minister one day.  «Every ounce of my energy shall be devoted to the service of our country and our people,» he said.  DPM Wong will be sworn into office at 8pm on May 15.

Lawrence Wong set to become Singapore's Prime Minister in May

Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, 51, will become Singapore's fourth Prime Minister on May 15, 2024.  Wong will be sworn into office at 8pm that day.  In a statement to the press on Monday (April 15), Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said he would relinquish his role in a month's time.  He will also formally advise the President to appoint Wong to succeed him.  PM Lee, 72, said last year that he would step down by November 2024 if all goes well, and before the next general election (GE). The next GE has to be held by November 2025. In April 2022, Wong was endorsed as the leader of the ruling People's Action Party's (PAP) fourth-generation (4G) team, paving the way for him to be Singapore's next prime minister.  The decision was then endorsed by all government MPs in a party caucus, said PM Lee, who is secretary-general of the PAP. Wong had emerged as the top choice of 15 out of the 19 stakeholders involved.

'They can buy up to $5,000 at one go': Some money changers run out of Korean won after it falls to new low against Singapore dollar

With the cherry blossom season in full bloom, many Singaporeans may be heading to South Korea. And with the won dipping to a 10-year low against the Singapore dollar, these travellers have even more to cheer about. The won had already been gradually sliding against the Singapore dollar in the past month, according to foreign exchange website xe.com. At 5.30pm last Friday (April 12), the exchange rate was 1018.16 won. At the time of publication, it is 1016.07 won. Some money changers are seeing more customers buying the Korean won and in larger sums, with a handful saying they are selling out the currency early in the day. The owner of Fiat Money Changer, located at The Arcade in Raffles Place, told AsiaOne that he has observed a spike in the number of customers buying the won.  «Depending on the day, we can even sell out [the won] by 3pm or 4pm,» he said, adding that the amounts changed are also higher. Currently, he has no plans to stock more won.

'I don't dare to go home early': Yishun resident living in fear, claims female neighbour harassing him for past 5 years

Home is meant to be a safe space for rest - but this woman may have turned her neighbour's haven into a waking nightmare. A resident in Yishun has claimed that his neighbour has constantly harassed him for the past five years, Shin Min Daily News reported on Sunday (April 14). The resident, surnamed Zhao, told Shin Min that a female neighbour surnamed Liang has hurled insults at him, vandalised his door, thrown liquids and garbage at the doorstep of his home in a HDB block along Yishun Street 22 for half a decade. Although Zhao said he has contacted the police more than 20 times, her harassment has not stopped so he installed a security camera outside his home in hopes of collecting evidence. This allowed him a bit of room to breathe, as Liang reportedly stopped throwing liquids and rubbish at the 43-year-old's door. But other forms of harassment didn't stop, causing Zhao grief. In footage seen by Shin Min, Liang can be seen striking Zhao's metal gate, pelting him with vulgarities. To make matters worse, the woman seems bent on targeting only Zhao, he told Shin Min.

Little red dot goes big: Singapore to showcase ‘dreams’ in Japan’s ‘dream island’

The little red dot makes a scaled up 17-metre-tall transformation for the Singapore Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka. Spanning almost two years of planning, Singapore is the first of 64 countries in the world to begin construction of our pavilion at the expo. Aptly named the Dream Sphere, this installation is set to be the centrepiece of the Singapore Pavilion at next year's edition of the world expo. In a media preview held last Monday (April 8), Singapore Tourism Board's Executive Director for World Expo and Special Projects, Carrie Kwik outlines how the pavilion will «share the narrative of Singapore's very bold and contemporary spirit.» With Singapore's tagline being Where Dreams take Shape, the making of the dream sphere is a collaborative effort in visualising the nation's aspirations. Of which the pavilion tells the story of building a liveable sustainable city, that would take care of all who live on the island. The pavilion also aims to reach out to at least 1 million attendees by the end of the six-month-long event.

'Popcorn lung', cancer: Experts warn of dangers as vaping among youth in Singapore spikes

SINGAPORE – Doctors treating respiratory issues are not always aware if their patients have been vaping. Therefore, cases are not tracked systematically at hospitals because these patients are not always willing to share their vaping history. With the clampdown on vaping and the authorities stepping up checks, even in public hot spots such as the Central Business District, parks, malls and bars, patients with breathing issues caused by vaping are aware and are keeping mum. Dr Sewa Duu Wen, who heads the department of respiratory and critical care medicine at Singapore General Hospital, told The Straits Times about one case of a patient who had been smoking e-cigarettes. “We have reported (a case) where a patient developed respiratory failure due to abnormal build-up of protein and fatty material within the air sac (in the lungs) after having started vaping.” He said the man underwent an uncommon treatment procedure, termed whole lung lavage, at the hospital. Sometimes called lung washing, the treatment is a specific procedure that uses saline solution to “wash out” the lungs.

I don't want to die alone, says 103-year-old woman who's living on her own

As the Singapore population ages, the demand for suitable care solutions for seniors has become more pressing. They want to hold on to their independence but will require some form of caregiving. Here's one senior citizen, who spoke in Hokkien, describing how she wants to live out her golden years. Madam Liew Thye Moi, 103 I have five children — three sons and two daughters. One son died in 2020. My husband, who died in 1981, was a civil servant. When my children were young, we lived in an attap house in Jalan Afifi in Paya Lebar. When I was younger, I worked as a confinement nanny for the female employees of Ban Hin Lee Bank (which went on to merge with other banks to form CIMB). I was also a babysitter.  In my 50s, I moved out of the attap house to a four-room flat in Sims Drive. That house is under my son's name. In 1988, when I was 67 years old, I rented a two-bedroom flat in Circuit Road. By then, my children were married and had their own homes.

'I smell oil every day': Buangkok residents complain of foul air from 8 exhaust pipes on rooftop of neighbouring mall

Residents in a Buangkok HDB block have been left fuming following the installation of exhaust pipes on the rooftop of a neighbouring mall. One resident surnamed Sun complained about the smell of oil and smoke emanating from the exhaust pipes which are visible from her flat window.  The 44-year-old who lives at Block 999B Buangkok Crescent told Shin Min Daily News that her home faces Buangkok Square shopping mall.  She purchased the high-rise unit early last year, and claimed that there was no such smell when renovations were ongoing then.  The eight exhaust pipes on the mall's rooftop were install to get rid of the fumes from the F&B establishments inside the mall.  «Every time I open the window there's an oil smell. It forces me to shut the windows or open them slightly.»  Sun installed an air purifier in her home, and has placed several fragrance bags around the house to combat the smell.  She has also made complaints through the OneService app, but was told that the installation of the exhaust pipes comply with regulations as they did not directly face her flat.
