National Day Rally 2019: 8 things to know about PM Lee Hsien Loong's speech

SINGAPORE - Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, in his National Day Rally speech on Sunday (Aug 18), discussed the challenges facing Singapore and the steps that the Government will take to renew the city for the next century. In Singapore's bicentennial year, he called on Singaporeans to carry the grit and resolve of their forefathers in tackling difficulties ahead, such as a slowing economy, trade tensions between the United States and China, and climate change. To make the education system as accessible as possible, he announced changes to pre-school and tertiary education fees. To help Singaporeans work longer if they wish to, the retirement and re-employment ages will be raised. PM Lee also sketched out bold plans to remake Singapore, including the future Greater Southern Waterfront, which is twice the size of Punggol and will have public and private housing with waterfront promenades. Here are eight things to know from his speech.

7 social enterprises where you can do good while you shop in Singapore

The reason the Great Singapore Workout never got taken seriously, other than the fact it looks ridiculous, is that Singapore already has a national sport-shopping. Think running a marathon is hard? Try walking through 42km worth of shopping mall floors or staying up to cart out your favourite item during some online flash sale. But even as Singaporeans spend their money with gleeful abandon, few stop to think about the larger impact of their actions on the world at large. To most, your money just goes to some corporation that gets a bit richer. Fewer people worry about the effect of rabid consumerism on the environment and on the underprivileged communities in which these products are often produced. The next time you're looking for a gift for a friend's birthday, a treat for your kids or a little something for yourself, instead of hitting up the usual big chain stores, take a peek at these four retailers in Singapore, where you can be sure your money is going to a good cause. That being said, we've done the legwork for you and put together a list of interior firms that specialise in creating these fashionable spaces. 1. ICON INTERIOR DESIGN First on our list of contemporary interior firms is Icon Interior Design. Bus involved in fatal Tuas crash was travelling at three times the 'safe speed'

SINGAPORE - A Malaysia-registered bus that was involved in a fatal accident on a ramp near the arrival hall of Tuas Checkpoint in Feb 2019 had been travelling at more than three times the reported safe speed before it hit a wall. On Friday (Aug 16), Coroner Marvin Bay noted that the Malaysian driver, Mr Kalaimani Muniandy, 60, had been driving at more than 60kmh before the accident took place at a bend at around 4.30am on Feb 26. The «safe speed» for travelling there was 15 to 20kmh, investigation officer (IO) Senior Staff Sergeant Clarence Lim told the court. He, however, did not state the speed limit for motorists in the area. Two passengers in the bus were flung out of the vehicle and the women fell about three storeys to the ground below. One of them, Malaysian production operator Mok Fei Chen, 35, died of multiple injuries at the scene while the 21-year-old woman survived. Coroner Bay found Madam Mok's death to be a «tragic traffic misadventure».
