Beware of new phishing scam involving fraudulent Budget 2024 infographics: Police

SINGAPORE – A new variant of phishing scams, involving fraudulent Budget 2024 infographics, is making its rounds online, said the police in an advisory on April 23. In this scam variant, potential victims would receive a Telegram message containing an infographic on Budget 2024 supposedly from the Ministry of Finance (MOF). The infographic – accompanied by a link – would then direct victims to verify their eligibility for government cash disbursements on the website. Those who click on the link would be directed to another fraudulent website requesting victims’ names and Telegram accounts’ contact numbers to verify their so-called eligibility for government assistance. Victims who fill in their information and click on the verify button may receive notifications from Telegram that a new device has attempted to log in to their accounts. But it would be too late as they would have revealed their information by then. The fraudulent infographic would also be forwarded to other Telegram users in the victims’ contact list, and they would be added to unknown Telegram group chats related to purported investment opportunities.

When Norzihan Juwahib succumbed to her injuries at the hospital on Monday (April 22), it was yet another blow dealt to her family. The 57-year-old's death was the third in the family within a year.  Norzihan was one of the two people who died after a six-vehicle collision at the junction of Tampines Avenue 1 and Avenue 4 that morning. In an interview with 8world on Tuesday, her younger brother revealed that the family had also lost their father and another sister in the past year. «My mother is really strong and there're really no words to describe the grief of losing three family members within one year,» he said. Norzihan, who was single and worked at pest control firm First Choice Pest Specialist, was the eldest of six siblings. Her brother described her as quiet, independent and being close to the family. She was the primary caregiver for their 78-year-old mother, who lives in Tampines.

Frozen birthday cakes and floor exercises: Singaporean submariner shares what life at sea is like

KIEL, GERMANY — While many Singaporeans may prefer to stay away from the sun these days, when UV levels are going north, Military Expert 3 Hariiheran Naidu loves basking in it.  As a submarine instructor with the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN), the 36-year-old is often inside a vessel for long periods of time.  So whenever he is back on our sunny shores, he tries to get as much sunlight as he can, usually by taking his young daughter out to play football.  ME3 Hariiheran spoke to AsiaOne in Kiel, Germany, where the Inimitable, the last of four Invincible-class submarines, was unveiled in a launch ceremony on Monday (April 22) officiated by Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean.   Apart from sunlight, the other thing a submariner would experience a shortage of would be space. Finding room to work out or relax on board is a challenge, said ME3 Hariiheran, who joined the Navy in 2007.

SINGAPORE - She was regarded by her peers and juniors as a “high-flier”. In Primary 6, Afifah Munirah Muhammad Azril was the head prefect at Meridian Primary School in Pasir Ris. In 2020, Afifah, then studying at Cedar Girls’ Secondary School, returned to her alma mater to nurture and speak to pupils, a 12-year-old boy living in the same block as her in Pasir Ris told The Straits Times. But the bright girl with so much potential met a tragic end on the morning of April 22. The Year 1 student of Temasek Junior College was one of two killed in a six-vehicle accident at the junction of Tampines Avenue 1 and Avenue 4. At about 7am, Afifah, 17, was in her father’s car on the way to her college’s running event at Temasek Polytechnic when it was involved in the collision that landed eight other people in hospital.

SINGAPORE - Six people were taken to hospital following a chain collision on the PIE on the evening of April 22. When contacted, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the accident along the PIE towards Tuas, before the BKE exit, at about 9.40pm. Three people were taken to National University Hospital and another three were taken to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital. A video of the aftermath of the incident, which was circulated on messaging platform Telegram, shows six cars, including a red Trans-Cab taxi, on the second left-most lane of the expressway. At least four cars seem to be damaged, with either their boot compartment, car hood, or both, crumpled inwards. Two left-most lanes of the expressway were blocked due to the accident. Police cars, a fire engine and five ambulances were at the scene, as seen in the video. The Straits Times has contacted the police for more information. The multi-car accident on the PIE follows another multi-vehicle accident earlier on April 22.

'Uniquely Singaporean': Navy launches 4th Invincible-class submarine in Germany

On a cold, snowy morning in the bustling German port city of Kiel, Singapore launched its fourth Invincible-class submarine — the Inimitable. Built by the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN), Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) and German manufacturer thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (tkMS), it is part of a four-submarine fleet that replaces the Navy's Challenger- and Archer-class vessels.  The first submarine, Invincible, was unveiled in 2019, while the second and third — the Impeccable and the Illustrious — were launched in December 2022, also in Kiel.  On Monday (April 22), the Inimitable joined the family at a launch ceremony at tkMS' shipyard, which AsiaOne attended. It was officiated by Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean. In keeping with naval tradition, a new vessel is always launched by a female civilian, known as a lady sponsor.

After losing her hard-earned money to a pickpocket, a sales promoter in Jurong West was so distraught that she slit her hand with a knife last Saturday (April 20). But thanks to a few passers-by who managed to restrain her, the woman, who sells juice blenders, could not harm herself further, Shin Min Daily News reported. The incident happened at a stall set up outside a provision shop at Block 504, Jurong West Street 51 at around 10.30am. A man who was present at the scene, Lin Kun Yao (transliteration), told the Chinese evening daily that a man was seen squatting next to the sales promoter. On the pretext of tying his shoelaces, he was believed to have nicked $2,000 from the woman's bag, which was made up of the stall's takings for the week and her own money, the 37-year-old added. Shortly after she discovered the money gone and called the police, she was seen sobbing while squatting, her face buried in her hands. The agitated woman later picked up a fruit knife that was on the table and slit her hand. That alarmed several passers-by, who rushed to take the knife away from her.

Singaporean rower Saiyidah Aisyah qualifies for Paris Olympics 2024

SINGAPORE – As Singaporean rower Saiyidah Aisyah emerged from her boat on April 21, the biggest day of her Olympic qualification campaign, she could not help but feel upset about how her race had gone. Nerves got the better of her on Tangeum Lake in Chungju, South Korea, where the Asian and Oceanian Olympic Qualification Regatta was taking place. She finished sixth in the A final of the women’s single sculls in 7min 59.06sec, just shy of a top-five spot needed to seal a place at the July 26-Aug 11 Paris Games. But as she headed for the shower, her coach Alan Bennett stopped her, telling her to go to the grandstand instead as she had qualified for the Olympics. Within half an hour, her disappointment turned into disbelief as she received confirmation that she was heading for her second Games. The 36-year-old had been bumped up to fifth after Japan’s Shiho Yonekawa, who clocked 7min 35.93sec to finish second in the 2,000m race, was not awarded a quota spot.

Employees can ask for FWA from Dec 1: What flexi-work requests must employers fairly consider under new rules?

Q: What are the different types of flexi-work my employer must fairly consider under the Tripartite Guidelines on Flexible Work Arrangement Requests? A: The tripartite guidelines unveiled on April 15 adopt a broad definition of flexible working arrangements that employers must fairly consider and be open to offering. They encompass flexi-place, flexi-time and flexi-load arrangements. Flexi-place arrangements allow employees to choose to work elsewhere from a designated workplace, or have no designated workplace to begin with. Flexi-time arrangements entail staff working flexibly at different timings with no changes to total work hours and work load. People on flexi-load arrangements generally take up different work loads, with pay adjusted to match. The Straits Times examines some key forms of flexible working arrangements under each category that employers need to fairly consider when requests are made. Flexi-place Remote working or telecommuting Remote work has been thrust into the spotlight in recent years due to its widespread adoption during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mitchell Ong, who was identified on April 20 by Spanish media as a suspect in the case, is a fitness enthusiast who frequented a gym in Orchard Road three to five times a week. An acquaintance, who declined to be identified, said he knew that Ong, 43, often travelled overseas. “He was nice during the interactions I had with him... I recall he likes to travel for business and raves,” he said. A check on Ong’s Instagram account showed that he had attended several music festivals abroad. Between 2022 and 2024, he also travelled to different parts of Europe. In a more recent post, he shared that he was in Alicante on April 4, the same day Ms Fang travelled alone to Xabia, which is about 80km away. In another post, Ong showed that he had purchased a gaming card valued at a few thousand dollars.

SINGAPORE – A 2.5km-long underground link will be built to connect the future Changi Airport Terminal 5 (T5) with the existing Terminal 2 (T2). It comprises tunnels for an automated people-mover system – similar to today’s Skytrain – and a separate system to handle baggage. Part of ongoing infrastructural works at the new 1,080ha Changi East development, the T2 Connection will link T5 with Changi’s existing terminals when the mega terminal opens in the mid-2030s, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) told The Straits Times in response to queries. New details about this inter-terminal underground link were first reported by Chinese-language daily Lianhe Zaobao on April 14. Earlier in February, construction work for the T2 Connection at Changi East appeared as a new line item in the Government’s projected development expenditure for Budget 2024, with a total project cost exceeding $722 million. Preparatory work for the new underground link is already under way.

Names, e-mail addresses leaked in hacking of app managing student devices in 127 schools: MOE

SINGAPORE – The names and e-mail addresses of parents and teachers of 127 primary and secondary schools were leaked after a mobile platform on students’ personal learning devices was hacked, said the Ministry of Education (MOE) on April 19. Mobile Guardian’s user management portal was compromised at its headquarters by an incident of unauthorised access, which led to the leak of names and e-mail addresses of parents and teachers from five primary schools and 122 secondary schools, said MOE in a statement on its website. That means about a third of all primary and secondary schools in Singapore were affected by this leak. The Mobile Guardian app, which is installed on personal learning devices including Chromebook laptops and Apple’s iPad tablets, helps parents manage their children’s device use and restrict specific websites, apps and screen time. The parents and teachers whose personal information may have been leaked will be notified, said MOE. It added that they should remain vigilant against any phishing e-mails that may be sent to them. If parents have not received e-mails, it means they have not been affected by the leak, the statement said.

Would you willingly part with your money to make yourself feel less lonely?  Some men, who have been described as «drunkards who are not interested in drinking», have been doing so — even if it's only for a short while.  According to Shin Min Daily News on April 19, 30 to 40 Vietnamese women were accused of accompanying male patrons at a Geylang coffee shop for a quick buck.  They would walk between different tables and strike up conversations with middle-aged to old men.  These women are allegedly in Singapore with tourist visas.  While there is no specific price set, these men would generally pay around $20 to $30 for the 'services'. Some of the more generous ones are willing to pay more. «These women are also very good at observing people's behaviour. Once they find some generous guests, they will automatically approach them,» a witness told Shin Min Daily News.  It doesn't just stop at a few flirty exchanges of words.  The witness also revealed that if both parties «like each other» and a price can be agreed on, the men would accompany the women for shopping trips or bring them to hotels.

Upon first glance, the post on Facebook group Singapore Blessing Give Away by a woman named Katrina Rose seemed harmless enough.  Katrina had simply mentioned that she and her husband were moving away and wanted to sell some of their items as they were unable to bring everything along with them.  Some of these included a Samsung microwave for $260, a 2015 Macbook Air for $500 and a dark brown coffee table for $300.  However, upon further inspection, netizen Kiong Boon Wee noticed something was a little off — Katrina said she was moving to Pulau Tekong. MADRID — A Singaporean man has been remanded after appearing in court in Spain on April 19 in connection with the death of Singaporean architect Audrey Fang, who had gone missing last week while on holiday and was found with multiple stab wounds. The 43-year-old suspect, who has not been named, as is the custom in Spain, appeared in a court in Murcia in south-eastern Spain. He was photographed being led by two Spanish Civil Guard officers into court, in handcuffs. Fang's body was found with signs of an assault with a «bladed weapon», the Spanish Civil Guard told The Straits Times. Fang, 39, was reportedly stabbed more than 30 times. The court magistrate on April 19 said that her body can be returned to her family for repatriation to Singapore. An autopsy was completed by forensic scientists, but the results have not been made public. Her body was found on April 10 at a lorry park in Abanilla, a municipality in the Murcia region, around 150km away or about two hours' drive from her hotel in Xabia, also in south-eastern Spain, where she was seen alive on April 9 at 8.45pm on closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras.

SINGAPORE — A 19-year-old student who posed as a Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) official to help scammers defraud a woman here was sentenced to eight weeks in jail on April 18. Chinese national Li Jiarui, a computer science student at the Singapore Institute of Management, pleaded guilty to two charges. They comprise one count of intentionally aiding unknown people with carrying out a domestic money transfer service and another count of engaging in a conspiracy to cheat CIMB bank. Another four similar charges were taken into consideration for his sentencing. The court heard that in October 2022, Li received a call, supposedly from DBS Bank, informing him that his identity had been misused for a credit card application in China. He then got a call from «Chinese police» who told him he was being investigated for money laundering. Li did not verify the authenticity of these claims. Several police officers outfitted with riot gear and weapons were seen breaching a HDB unit in Lengkok Bahru in a viral TikTok video uploaded by user Zailia7276 on Wednesday (April 17). In the video, officers can be seen positioning themselves outside the flat, with one officer pointing a riot-control weapon, the P4.1, through the grills of the metal gate. The P4.1, introduced into the Singapore Police Force's arsenal in 2015, is a less-than-lethal weapon that can be used to fire pepper spray and mark out rioters. The armed officer then steps aside as other officers bring over an electric saw from the right and begin to cut at the gate, sending sparks flying. Meanwhile, another group on the left stands at the ready with an officer in the front, holding a riot shield. An officer then steps in from the right, pulling the now-broken gate open as officers on the left rush into the flat.

SINGAPORE – A woman who was sexually exploited by her step-uncle as a teenager broke her silence about it several years later, after she spotted the man in public while she was with her husband and in-laws. On April 18, the 39-year-old man, who is the younger brother of her stepmother, was sentenced to 18 years’ jail and 24 strokes of the cane by the High Court. He had pleaded guilty to two charges of aggravated sexual assault by penetration and one charge of outrage of modesty. Another eight charges for various sexual offences, including sexual penetration of a minor, were taken into consideration. SINGAPORE — Some residents at Block 131B Kim Tian Road woke up on April 17 to find that their water supply had been cut off. The disruption, which lasted at least six hours, was caused by a burst underground pipe, a spokesperson for the Tanjong Pagar Town Council said in response to queries. The spokesperson added that 16 units from the second to fifth floors of the block were affected by the incident. The other floors in the 30-storey Housing Board block, as well as the other blocks in the estate, were not affected. Shin Min Daily News reported that a resident noticed the outage at 5am on April 17. The town council spokesperson told The Straits Times that the water supply was restored by 11am that same day, after contractors made a «temporary connection» to the water supply for the affected units. PUB and town council staff distributed bags of water to residents from 8am, the spokesperson said, adding that contractors also installed water taps for residents to draw water near the rubbish chute area from the ground floor to the fifth.

The next time you're at a Kopitiam food court, the person preparing your order could be the big boss himself. Back in a new spot? Illegal mobile petrol station captured on video at Woodlands car park

Have illegal mobile petrol stations made a comeback? The authorities have previously cracked down on operators who sold illegal diesel in Tampines and Pioneer. A Malaysian-registered lorry was also spotted peddling diesel in Taman Jurong last year. But it appears that these mobile fuel stations may now be operating at a new location. A YouTube video uploaded by SG Road Vigilante on Monday (April 15) shows a Malaysian-registered truck and Singapore-registered lorry parked closely to each other and connected by a white hose. Two men are standing next to the Malaysian lorry. The video caption states that this took place at a car park for heavy vehicles in Woodlands. Speaking to Shin Min Daily News at the car park, a lorry driver surnamed Hong said that Malaysian lorry drivers have been running mobile fuel stations there for some time.

Cordlife lodges police report against ex-employees for potential wrongdoings

SINGAPORE — Cordlife's board of directors has lodged a police report on April 17 over potential wrongdoings, amid an internal probe. Processes at the cord blood banking company have been in the spotlight after it was revealed on Nov 30, 2023, that cryopreserved CBUs (cord blood units) in seven of its 22 storage tanks were exposed to suboptimal storage temperatures. In one of the seven tanks, 2,200 cord blood units were rendered unsuitable for stem cell transplants. Cordlife said in the filing: « Based on the preliminary findings of internal investigations conducted by an external consultant engaged by the COI (the Committee of Inquiry, which are still ongoing) and the information available, the COI is of the view that it has uncovered preliminary evidence of potential wrongdoings involving mostly former employees of the group in connection with the Tank A incident.» In a bourse filing on April 18, the company said it had convened a COI to conduct internal investigations into why about 2,200 cord blood units in Tank A were damaged.

'Aren't you embarrassed?' Woman blasted for using body to chope lot for Singapore-registered car in Kluang

Tangkak Beef Noodles is known, among other things, for its deliciously thick slices of beef - but perhaps they aren't quite as thick as this woman's skin, if netizens are to be believed. A woman has earned the ire of netizens after using her body to 'chope' a parking lot in Malaysia, holding it for a Singapore-registered car, according to a video uploaded to SG Road Vigilante last Saturday (April 13). In the video, a car turns into a parking lot right outside Tangkak Beef Noodles in Kluang, Malaysia, but stops when the driver notices a woman standing in the lot. The woman, holding an umbrella in the rain, is quick to wave her hand as the car approaches, shooing the driver away as she stands her ground, refusing to move. She also motions to indicate disapproval as the driver tries to park, denying the driver from parking in the lot. Later, an image of a Singapore-registered car is shown in the video, presumably the car that took the lot instead. Her actions enraged many online with some specifically addressing her «kiasu-ism (Slang for a scared-to-lose behaviour)».
