Malta hosted 19 refugees for every 1,000 inhabitants last year, putting it among the main host countries in the world, a new United Nations report has found. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees report on displacement found that Sweden was the only European country to have a higher ratio, at 24 refugees for every 1,000 inhabitants. Last year, there were approximately 8,000 refugees on the island, the report found, nearly half of whom had received assistance from UNHCR. Malta had another 1,378 pending asylum applications and 11 people who claimed to be stateless – or not considered to be a national by any State under the operation of its law. UNHCR said that there were nearly 10,000 people living in Malta who were considered the “population of concern” when it came to displacement and status.
