SINGAPORE - Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong is seeking damages in the region of $150,000 from blogger Leong Sze Hian over a libellous article he shared on Facebook, with the Prime Minister's lawyer arguing on Monday (Nov 30) that Mr Leong had not only made «stunning allegations», but had cynically politicised the case and recast PM Lee's effort to vindicate himself as victimisation. But Mr Leong's lawyer said his client was singled out as he was a prominent critic of the Government, adding that PM Lee had used the «full weight of the government machinery» to come down on Mr Leong in an act of abuse. He insisted that PM Lee did not suffer any damage to his reputation, and deserved at most only derisory damages of $1 per person who saw the post. The two lawyers were making their closing submissions before High Court Judge Aedit Abdullah in the defamation suit against Mr Leong.

HDB to build diverse flat types, keep prices affordable in prime locations

SINGAPORE - A range of housing types will be built in upcoming estates in prime locations such as the Greater Southern Waterfront (GSW) to ensure that all public housing estates will have a good mix of Singaporeans, said National Development Minister Desmond Lee. These include smaller housing types such as two-room flats for seniors and rental housing for low-income families, depending on the planning parameters and the needs of different housing types, but are «deliberately injected», he said in an interview with Lianhe Zaobao. Mr Lee acknowledged the «lottery effect» of these well-located Housing Board flats, which may result in a «likely windfall» for home owners who sell these government-subsidised build-to-order (BTO) flats on the resale market. There is the issue of «inclusiveness and diversity» when these flats are allowed to be resold after the five-year minimum occupation period, he said.

Saudi Arabia takes lead in fight against virus

Mon, 2020-11-30 19:45 JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Health announced 232 new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases on Monday, with numbers remaining steady and daily counts of between 200-350 for more than two weeks. Monday’s numbers bring the number of total cases in the Kingdom to 357,360 since the beginning of the pandemic in early March. Riyadh recorded 67 new cases. Madinah and Jeddah reported 18 new cases each, while Makkah and Dammam had 13 new cases apiece. Only seven cities are recording cases in the double digits, according to the ministry’s daily COVID-19 dashboard. The ministry said there were 393 new recoveries, raising the total number of recoveries to 246,802. The country’s recovery rate has climbed to 97 percent. There are 4,662 active cases, 659 of which are in critical care. Ministry spokesman Dr. Mohammed Al-Abd Al-Aly said there was a halt in rising case numbers, and that the number of critical care patients was decreasing due to community cooperation and the proper implementation of health protocols by authorities. “The number of confirmed cases has stabilized in the past week,” he said, adding that people’s adherence to health protocols was the reason for both the steady decrease in numbers and the stabilization. The ministry has urged people showing any symptoms of coronavirus disease to visit one of its Tetamman (Rest Assured) clinics to be tested for the virus. There are about 235 of the clinics across the Kingdom, and appointments for tests can be booked through the Sehaty app. The ministry has also set up health centers, called Takkad (Make Sure), to cater to people who show no or only mild symptoms of the disease, but think they might have come into contact with someone who was infected. Saudi rights body signs deal to launch programs for prisoners’ rights

Author: Mon, 2020-11-30 22:22 RIYADH: Dr. Awwad Al-Awwad, president of the Human Rights Commission, on Monday said the Kingdom attaches great importance to the rights of prisoners and provides them with comprehensive care through various rehabilitation programs to help them integrate into society and become productive citizens. He was speaking at the signing ceremony of three memorandums understanding (MoUs) with the National Committee for Prisoners, their Families, and Ex-Convicts (Tarahum) in Riyadh. Al-Awwad said teams from the commission regularly visit prisons and detention facilities to ensure the rights of inmates are protected. He said the commission works with the General Directorate of Prisons to promote prisoners’ rights in line with national regulations and international and regional agreements. The agreement envisages the establishment of three centers. The first center will be set up to support alternative punishments; the second center will be dedicated to visual communication between prisoners and their families; and the third will design and implement awareness programs. Tarahum Secretary-General Turki bin Abdullah Al-Bati said the MoUs will help widen the scope of the committee, which seeks to work for the betterment of society in cooperation with relevant authorities.   Main category: Saudi ArabiaTags: Saudi ArabiaSaudi Human Rights Commission (HRC) Saudi rights chief receives head of EU delegationSaudi rights body empowers women, youth through partnerships, workshops
