Glenstal Abbey, one of Ireland's best-known private schools, looks set to close. An internal assessment carried out at the Co Limerick school reached a blunt conclusion. It stated plainly that 'the kind of school we have here at Glenstal is not sustainable into the future'. The school operates alongside a Benedictine monastery near Murroe and has built a national reputation for boarding and strong exam results. Fees put it at the top end of the Irish market, and its places have long been in demand. Parents and staff will now want clarity on when the doors shut and how current pupils will be looked after. No detailed timetable for the closure has been laid out.
