Two Wicklow disability centres record major improvement after serious HIQA concerns

Two designated disability centres in County Wicklow have received a much better verdict from the health watchdog HIQA than the one they earned before. Inspectors had previously raised serious concerns about how the centres were run and how residents were being looked after. A follow-up assessment has found that both services have now improved markedly. The turnaround brings the centres closer to the national standards that apply to residential services for people with disabilities in Ireland. Turning an inspection record around usually takes sustained work on staffing and on governance of the service. HIQA can still return to check that the gains hold, so the centres will not simply be left alone. For residents and their families, the revised findings bring a measure of reassurance after a difficult period.
