Lithuania's parliament has voted to scrap a constitutional ban on hosting weapons of mass destruction on its soil. The amendment also removes the prohibition on foreign military bases being stationed in the country. In the Seimas, 99 lawmakers backed the change against 13 opponents, with five abstentions. The national broadcaster LRT reported the tally. A final approval vote is still needed before the amendment can take effect. Vilnius sits close to both Russian territory and allied Belarus, and the government has pushed hard for a bigger allied presence since Russia invaded Ukraine. The constitutional change keeps the door open for future basing decisions, up to and including any debate over nuclear deployment.
