NS-Kinderheim in Steyr: "Diese Kinder verschwanden aus allen Unterlagen"
Historian Hagmayr has documented the fate of children held in a Nazi-era children's home in Steyr. The Kinderheim took in the children of women brought to the Upper Austrian town as forced labourers. His research carries a blunt message: these children vanished from all the records. No document states where they went or what became of them. Steyr was a major armaments centre during the war, and its factories ran at scale on forced labour. Children born to those workers were taken from their mothers and placed in dedicated homes rather than cared for by family. Investigations of similar facilities in other places have documented extremely high infant death rates. Hagmayr's work adds the Steyr cases to a history that Austria is still slowly piecing together.
