The Democratic Republic of Congo has drawn up a 180-day plan to prepare for and contain its Ebola outbreak. Officials put the cost of the effort at 1.2 billion US dollars. The epidemic involves the Bundibugyo strain, which the authorities officially declared on May 15, 2026. Bundibugyo was first identified in Uganda in 2007 and tends to kill a smaller share of those infected than the Zaire type behind past West African outbreaks. The roadmap covers prevention, surveillance, treatment and community outreach in the affected areas. Funding on that scale will likely require international donors, since Congo's health budget cannot absorb it alone. Previous outbreaks in the country were contained with vaccination and contact tracing, backed by field treatment centers, and the new plan is expected to lean on the same tools. The next six months will show whether the money arrives fast enough to keep the virus boxed in.
