Protests against expensive housing drew crowds onto the streets of Madrid and several other Spanish cities on Saturday, the latest in a series of demonstrations that have kept the rental crisis at the top of the national political agenda. In response, the governing social democrats drafted two bills intended to make life easier for tenants. The proposals went to parliament carrying the hope of relief for renters squeezed by rising costs. Instead of passing them, parliament voted both bills down. That decision leaves tenants without the legal help the government had promised, and it risks feeding further anger on the streets. Protest organizers have shown little sign of backing off, with turnout holding up week after week. The rejection also hands opposition parties ammunition in a fight likely to run well beyond this weekend.

Madridē un vairākās citās Spānijas pilsētās sestdien notiek kārtējie protesti pret mājokļu dārdzību. Reaģējot uz protestiem, Spānijā valdošie sociāldemokrāti iesniedza parlamentā divus likumprojektus ar mērķi uzlabot īrnieku situāciju. Tomēr parlaments tos noraidījis.
