The National Centre for Scientific Research Demokritos in Greece is cutting the ribbon today on a new smart building. The facility has been designed to take on a wide range of activities, from research work to meetings and public events. What makes the project unusual is that the building doubles as a research subject, with its own systems under examination. Energy use, environmental conditions and the general behaviour of the structure can all be monitored as data while people work inside it. That hands researchers a live experiment in how smart construction actually behaves in daily use. The investment adds modern infrastructure to one of the country's established public research institutions. Work on collecting and analysing the building's own readings is set to continue long after today's ceremony.
