Timor-Leste has received an award from the World Health Organization for eliminating trachoma as a public health problem. Health Minister Elia dos Reis Amaral accepted the recognition from WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Tuesday. The honor was presented during the 79th session of the WHO Regional Committee for South-East Asia, which is being held in Dili. Trachoma, an eye disease tied to poor sanitation, can lead to blindness, so wiping it out counts as a major public health win.
