Hundreds of officers turned out to mourn a colleague killed in a crash on the A66, the mood subdued as the funeral procession arrived. Many hugged one another while they waited, and some quietly straightened ties and fixed lapels. The officer died when he was hit by a car, and its passenger was mourned at a separate service. Police arrested a man at that service on suspicion of assault.
