South Africa's AI Paradox: Best Prepared, Most Exposed

South Africa is currently the most AI-ready outsourcing destination in Africa and, by a separate measure, the most AI-exposed workforce in sub-Saharan Africa. Those two facts sound contradictory, but they are actually describing the same phenomenon from opposite ends: a country that has adopted enterprise AI faster and more broadly than any of its regional peers is now the first on the continent to confront what that adoption means for the people whose jobs sit closest to it. That tension was the real subject of Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa's keynote at NEDLAC's 31st Annual Summit in Pretoria on 4 September, delivered on behalf of Deputy President Paul Mashatile under the theme " Advancing Inclusive Growth and Decent Work in the Age of AI."
