A new additive could dramatically extend the life of lithium batteries. The trick is adding fluorine to the graphite anode, which keeps capacity loss low even after 1,000 charge cycles. The same change raises the battery's energy density. If it holds up outside the lab, phones and electric cars could go through far more charging cycles before wearing out.
