The Houthis, Iran's allies in Yemen, have taken the coastal city of Mokha and extended their grip along the entire Red Sea shore. The advance puts the group astride the approaches to Bab el-Mandeb, one of the busiest shipping routes in the world. The tiny island of Perim, which sits in the strait, has emerged as the main prize, its value swelling since the Strait of Hormuz was effectively shut. The contest for that stretch of water has opened another front in the standoff between two great powers.
