The committee led by Justice K. Balakrishnan is unlikely to recommend adding religious converts to the Scheduled Castes list. Its report will most probably advise the government to keep the current arrangement unchanged. That means people who converted out of castes already on the list would not be brought under it. The debate over whether converts should retain Scheduled Caste benefits has dragged on for years, but no expansion appears to be on the table.
