Saudi Arabia urges strict adherence to international law at UN Security Council

NEW YORK — Saudi Arabia has affirmed that adherence to international law and the UN Charter constitutes a fundamental pillar for maintaining international peace and security and protecting civilians in situations of armed conflict. Permanent Representative of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations Ambassador Dr. Abdulaziz Alwasil made the remarks during the Security Council meeting on the topic of upholding international law in situations of armed conflict in New York on Wednesday. He emphasized the need to protect civilians, civilian objects, and humanitarian and medical personnel, respect the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of states, and refrain from interfering in their internal affairs. Alwasil underscored the importance of applying international law without selectivity or double standards and strengthening accountability for violations—measures that help consolidate respect for international rules and principles. He also called for prioritizing dialogue and peaceful means, supporting mediation efforts to address and resolve conflicts, and mitigating their humanitarian and security repercussions. Alwasil reiterated the Kingdom's commitment to continuing its efforts to promote respect for international humanitarian law and the protection of civilians, and to supporting international endeavors aimed at achieving security and stability and resolving conflicts through peaceful means.
