Singapore becomes 'super-aged' society; population grows to 6.21 million even as births, marriages decline

Singapore's population rose 1.6 per cent to 6.21 million as of June 2026, even as the country officially became a "super-aged" society, with more than one in five citizens aged 65 and above.According to the Population in Brief report released by the National Population and Talent Division of the Prime Minister's Office and partner agencies on Friday (Sept 25), the increase was driven mainly by growth in the non-resident population.This was largely due to an increase in work permit holders in the construction sector, supporting key projects such as Changi Terminal 5, the Marina Bay Sands expansion, and the ramp-up of housing supply and transport infrastructure.The citizen population also grew by 0.7 per cent, from 3.66 million in June 2025 to 3.68 million in June 2026, while Singapore's permanent resident population remained relatively stable at 0.55 million.Decline in marriages and births At the same time, Singapore's population continued to age, with citizens aged 65 and above making up 21.4 per cent of the citizen population in 2026, up from 20.7 per cent in 2025 and 13.7 per cent a decade ago.
