Nas and Schele Williams are joining forces to turn the classic hip-hop film “Beat Street” into a Broadway musical. The film holds a special place in the story of hip-hop's move onto the big screen. Word of the creative team came out after a 29-hour workshop gave the producers a first full run-through of the material. The workshop let the team hear the songs and scenes out loud and see how the piece holds up off the page. Nas brings one of rap's most respected catalogs to the table, while Williams takes charge of the staging. No premiere date has been locked in yet. A production calendar and casting announcements are expected in the coming months. Until then, the workshop stands as the first public sign that the project is genuinely moving.
