A Ukrainian is set to join the United Nations Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture for the first time. Kyiv views the election as especially significant because thousands of Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilians held by Russia continue to be tortured and mistreated. The seat gives the country a voice in a UN body that works to stop abuse in detention.
