The contest between China and the United States has opened a new front in the Middle East. Beijing's leader travelled to Egypt with a proposal to reshape regional security through what the Chinese side calls strengthened dialogue. The trip reads as an effort to court Arab capitals while American standing in the region is being questioned. Both powers now treat the Middle East as part of their wider rivalry.
