Highfield resident jailed 10 years for stealing TelOne cables
A 35-year-old man from Highfield, Harare, has been jailed for 10 years after stealing TelOne cables valued at US$500. Fungai Craig Mangwiro was convicted and sentenced by a Mbare magistrate in the capital. Prosecutors told the court the theft happened on September 24, 2026, at 6.30pm along Boyd Road in Southerton. A community security guard caught him in the act at the scene. Cable theft has plagued the state telecoms operator for years, cutting off customers and forcing expensive repairs. Given the disruption such theft causes to the network, the decade-long term reflects how seriously the court treated the offence. The sentence stands out sharply against the modest value of the cables taken.
