IMF approves Zim’s second SMP review
The International Monetary Fund has cleared a second review of Zimbabwe's staff-monitored programme. The fund said the review recognised progress on macroeconomic stability and fiscal discipline, along with wider economic reforms. A staff-monitored programme is an informal arrangement for governments not yet able to commit to a full fund programme, so no direct financing rides on it. The clean review signals that fund staff are satisfied with the direction of policy in Harare. Zimbabwe has spent years trying to rebuild credibility with creditors after long stretches of arrears and isolation. Officials hope the endorsement will help open further doors in the re-engagement process. Sceptics will want to see the reforms hold before calling the turnaround complete.
