For the second year in a row, two left-wing lists have advanced to the runoff in the student federation elections at the Pontificia Universidad Católica in Chile. Nueva Acción Universitaria and Amanecer took the top two spots in the first round and moved into the head-to-head vote without trouble. Solidaridad UC and Movimiento Gremial finished third and fourth, missing the cut for the deciding round. The result came after a rough week for those two groups, whose representatives were assaulted at a Confech march a few days earlier. At the time, some in the university community believed the attacks might swing votes toward them out of sympathy. The first-round numbers suggest the incident did little to shift where the electorate stood. A runoff between the two progressive lists leaves the conservative camp shut out of the final, much as happened a year ago. The second round will now show whether that pattern has hardened into a standing feature of UC student politics.
