Officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps have uncovered underground tunnels at a suspected drug hideout in Asaba, Delta State. The site had been fortified, which made the discovery all the more striking for the operatives who carried out the raid. Investigators believe the tunnels were likely used to move or store contraband, though their full purpose is still being pieced together. The corps is also looking into whether the hideout was connected to other crimes beyond narcotics. Tunnels of this kind are rarely found attached to ordinary properties, which raises questions about how long the operation ran. Security agencies in Delta State have been under pressure to dismantle drug networks that feed other parts of the country. The probe continues, and arrests or charges could follow once the evidence has been sorted.
