Marmara'daki depremin röntgeni! O noktanın altını çizdi: İki ateş arasında
A Turkish seismology professor has zeroed in on the Çınarcık Fault as the place to watch in the Marmara region. According to Osman Bektaş, stress is being loaded onto the Çınarcık Basin from both the east and the west. He looked closely at micro-fractures on the Adalar and Çınarcık faults, the two structures that bound the basin. Those tiny ruptures, he argues, may show that the locked sections of the faults are being pushed to their limit. If that reading is right, the strain building behind the locks could end in a much larger earthquake. The Marmara region, home to Istanbul and its dense population, has been bracing for a major quake for decades. Bektaş's message is essentially that the area is caught between two sources of pressure, and neither is letting up.
