Αντίδραση Γκίλφοϊλ: Περήφανη για όσα πετύχαμε - Ψευδείς οι καταγγελίες

Την πρώτη δημόσια δήλωσή της μετά την επιβεβαίωση από τον Λευκό Οίκο ότι της ζητήθηκε να παραιτηθεί από τη θέση της πρέσβεως των ΗΠΑ στην Ελλάδα έκανε η Κίμπερλι Γκίλφοϊλ, απορρίπτοντας κατηγορηματικά τις καταγγελίες που διατυπώνονται σε βάρος της και αφήνοντας να εννοηθεί ότι η διπλωματική της θητεία στην Αθήνα οδεύει προς το τέλος της. Σε εκτενή δήλωσή της, η Αμερικανίδα διπλωμάτης υπεραμύνεται του έργου της, προβάλλοντας τις ενεργειακές συμφωνίες και την ενίσχυση της στρατηγικής συνεργασίας μεταξύ Ελλάδας και ΗΠΑ, ενώ παράλληλα υπογραμμίζει ότι παραμένει σταθερά αφοσιωμένη στον Ντόναλντ Τραμπ. «Είμαι υπερήφανη για όσα πετύχαμε μαζί και θα παραμείνω πάντοτε πιστή υποστηρίκτρια του προέδρου Τραμπ και της αποστολής του να κάνει την Αμερική ξανά μεγάλη», αναφέρει η Γκίλφοϊλ. Η δήλωσή της ακολουθεί την επίσημη ανακοίνωση του Λευκού Οίκου, με την εκπρόσωπο Τύπου, Κέιτι Ζακαράια, να επιβεβαιώνει ότι η αμερικανική κυβέρνηση ζήτησε την παραίτησή της, χαρακτηρίζοντάς την ταυτόχρονα «πολύτιμο μέλος» της ομάδας της. «Το να υπηρετήσω ως πρέσβης των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών στην Ελλάδα υπήρξε η μεγαλύτερη τιμή της ζωής μου», σημειώνει, εκφράζοντας την ευγνωμοσύνη της προς τον Αμερικανό πρόεδρο και τον υπουργό Εξωτερικών, Μάρκο Ρούμπιο. Σχετικά με τις αποκαλύψεις που προηγήθηκαν του αιτήματος παραίτησής της, η Γκίλφοϊλ υποστηρίζει ότι «οι καταγγελίες είναι ψευδείς», διαμηνύοντας ότι θα υπερασπιστεί αποφασιστικά το όνομά της, τη φήμη και την ακεραιότητά της. «Έχω αφιερώσει την επαγγελματική μου ζωή στον αγώνα για τη δικαιοσύνη, στην υπεράσπιση του σωστού και των αξιών που κάνουν την Αμερική ξεχωριστή. Δεν θα επιτρέψω σε ψευδείς κατηγορίες να καθορίσουν την εικόνα των δεκαετιών της δημόσιας προσφοράς μου», τονίζει. Κλείνοντας τη δήλωσή της, η Γκίλφοϊλ αφήνει ουσιαστικά ανοιχτό το ενδεχόμενο αποχώρησής της από τη θέση της πρέσβεως, αναφέροντας: «Μπορεί η θητεία μου ως πρέσβης να πλησιάζει στο τέλος της, όμως η αφοσίωσή μου στον πρόεδρο Τραμπ, στο κίνημα “Πρώτα η Αμερική” και στη χώρα που αγαπώ δεν θα τελειώσει ποτέ».
