South Africa needs protection, not an asylum system without limits

South Africa has a legal and humanitarian obligation to protect genuine refugees, but its urban asylum system faces serious questions over border control, administrative backlogs, corruption and the enforcement of rejected claims. With unemployment at crisis levels, the country needs a system that protects those fleeing persecution while ensuring asylum is not allowed to become a substitute for immigration control.
