The horse carriages on Velika Aleja in Ilidža still preserve the spirit of gentler times. Visitors pay 25 marks for a ride down the landmark tree-lined avenue in the town near Sarajevo. The passengers come from every generation and travel from different corners of the country to take the trip. Older riders trace memories along the alley, while children discover the carriages for the first time. The avenue remains one of the most recognizable sights of the Sarajevo area. Families treat an outing there as a tradition passed down through the years. Even as entertainment habits shift, the carriages still roll down the same route as always.
