Police in Slovenia have uncovered the largest illegal cigarette factory in the country, and with it dozens of exploited workers. Thirty-four victims of human trafficking were found at the plant. Their phones had been confiscated, and they were barred from leaving the site. They also received none of the pay they had been promised. Officers seized 14 million cigarettes along with 44 tons of tobacco during the operation. Investigators are now trying to establish who ran the factory and how long the scheme operated. The raid ranks among the most serious cases of labor exploitation discovered in Slovenia in recent years. Prosecutors are expected to pursue human trafficking charges against those responsible.
