Rescue crews are searching the waters south of Crete for a migrant reported missing at sea. According to testimony from fellow passengers, the man, a Sudanese national, fell overboard some 10 to 15 kilometers from the coast. The Greek Coast Guard and Frontex are both operating in the area as the search goes on. In the same case, 42 migrants managed to reach the shore at Lutra and were later taken to the port of Heraklion. Two pregnant women among the group were admitted to hospital for treatment. Testimony from survivors often provides the only lead when someone vanishes from an overloaded boat, since there is rarely a fixed position to search. The southern Crete route has been a recurring flashpoint in Mediterranean migration pressures over recent years. The operation can be expected to continue until authorities decide it has run its course.
