Maersk has carried out what is described as the world's largest ethanol bunkering operation, and it happened in Singapore. The Danish shipping group has been among the most aggressive adopters of alternative marine fuels as it tries to cut emissions from its vessels. Singapore is one of the busiest refuelling ports anywhere, which makes it the natural place to attempt a supply of this scale. Bunkering means transferring fuel from a supply vessel to a ship while in port, and doing it at record size demands tight coordination and strict safety routines. Ethanol sits alongside methanol among the fuels carriers are testing as substitutes for conventional oil-based bunker fuel. A completed operation of record size suggests the supply chain for these alternatives is starting to function in practice. Maersk has committed to net-zero emissions by 2040, and every sizable alternative-fuel delivery feeds into that plan.
