An indictment against a Polish citizen accused of setting fire to an altar in Medjugorje has been confirmed. According to the charges, the man first wrote inscriptions on the site in several languages. He then set the altar's inventory alight, causing damage put at more than 130,000 convertible marks, or roughly 66,000 euros. Confirmation of the indictment clears the way for the case to go to trial. Medjugorje draws large numbers of Catholic pilgrims each year, which helps explain the attention the vandalism has received. The charge sheet's mention of inscriptions in multiple languages suggests the act was not a spur-of-the-moment outburst.
