The Memorial Center Sarajevo has issued a sharp response to billboards put up in East Sarajevo featuring wartime leader Alija Izetbegović, which it branded shameful. In its statement, the institution said it guards the truth about the defense of Bosnia and Herzegovina with resolve. It stressed that no state honors can wash away crimes that courts have already adjudicated. It added that no billboards can take the place of judicial verdicts. Izetbegović led Bosnia and Herzegovina through the 1992 to 1995 war and chaired its presidency, so imagery of him remains charged wherever it appears. East Sarajevo lies in the Republika Srpska entity, where views of the wartime leadership of the country often clash with those held in the capital. By framing its reaction around court judgments, the center tied the episode to its broader mission of defending the legally established record of the war.
