The European Commission is directing 3.4 billion euros into 77 projects, and three of the selected ventures will be carried out in Greece. The grants come from a funding drive aimed at large projects that cut greenhouse gas emissions. Brussels calculates that the 77 schemes can prevent emissions equivalent to roughly 290 million tonnes during their first decade of operation. The Commission counts only the first ten years after the projects start running when it makes this projection. Projects of this kind usually involve cleaner energy production and industrial processes with a heavy carbon footprint. For Greece, three spots in the lineup mean substantial backing for domestic decarbonization efforts. With 3.4 billion euros behind it, the round ranks among the Commission's larger direct investments in emission-reducing technology.
