Austria has closed its investigation into two of its citizens suspected of taking part in the so-called Sarajevo Safari, saying there was not enough evidence to proceed. The term refers to visits during the siege of Sarajevo in which foreign visitors allegedly paid to fire at residents of the surrounded city from the hills above it. Prosecutors examined claims that the two Austrians had joined such tours. The witnesses who spoke about their suspected involvement had based their accounts on secondhand information, describing only what they had heard from other people. Testimony built on hearsay gave prosecutors no way to bring the case before a court. The file has now been shut, though it can be reopened if stronger evidence turns up. The closure leaves the wartime episode without any Austrian trial.
