Mamponghene warns against galamsey, destructive sand winning at Akrofonso
Daasebre Osei Bonsu III, Paramount Chief of Asante Mampong, has cautioned against illegal mining and improper sand winning around Mampong Akrofonso. He warned that unchecked digging for gold and sand could strip the community of the land it farms and the water bodies it depends on. The chief framed the protection of these resources as a condition for sustainable development in the area. Galamsey has already damaged rivers and weakened farmland in many parts of Ghana, which has pushed traditional authorities to speak out where enforcement has fallen short. At Akrofonso, the fear is that unregulated extraction will leave residents with degraded land and unsafe water in exchange for short-term gains. Daasebre Osei Bonsu III asked that the community's lands and water be preserved for the people who will live there after this generation. His warning places him among the traditional leaders who have taken a firm line against destructive mining.
