Deutschland Liveblog: Grüne und SPD stimmen für Koalitionsverhandlungen mit Linken in Berlin
Berlin's political parties are edging toward an unusual coalition. The Greens have voted to open joint coalition negotiations with the Left, following the same decision by the city's SPD. Delegates backed the step, so formal talks on a governing partnership in the capital can now begin. The possible outcome, often called red-red-green, would combine the SPD, the Greens and the Left in one city government. The negotiations will settle departmental portfolios and a shared program for the next legislature. Away from coalition-building, a dispute over political language also made news in Germany. Left politician Banaszak rejected comparisons drawn between the AfD and the Left, arguing that equating the two parties misreads both. The liveblog continues to track all of these developments as they come in.
