The Bayeux Tapestry will never go back on display by hanging, according to the plan now confirmed in France. French Culture Minister Catherine Pégard said the 11th-century embroidery, until now shown laid flat at the British Museum in London, will be mounted on a slanted table once it returns to the new museum in Bayeux. The incline is intended to protect the fragile cloth and to make viewing easier at the same time. Keeping an old textile flat or gently angled eases the strain on its stitches, which is why conservators have moved away from hanging such works. On an angled surface, visitors will also be able to follow the scenes along the entire length of the piece instead of stopping and starting. The tapestry, famous for depicting the Norman conquest of England in 1066, measures roughly 70 meters and cannot be shown like an ordinary painting. Its return to Normandy has been awaited as the homecoming of one of France's best known medieval treasures. The new museum in Bayeux is set to become its permanent home once the London showing ends.
